Ya know, you are on to something. I didn’t think of Prooflike, and a badly worn die, but now that you mention it, there are die artifacts all over the obverse. You could be correct that it is Prooflike, and the marks aren’t just a baggy Morgan, but a PL one, with an end of life state die.

Yeah, thanks. Where the dies aren't loused-up, that's where I'm seeing the PL.

As in a stronger PL reverse, and the obverse is more beat up looking, from die markers.

The 1881-S dollars were well made and many of them are in Mint State condition. I don't know what the grading services are doing now, but years ago, they were graded very conservatively.

I would say that this piece is no better than MS-63 in the holder. It might be an MS-62 if the "gray areas" on Ms. Liberty's cheek and neck look like that in person.

I agree. That's a thing you don't read about in Coin World, but just kind of notice. They were made too good for their own good. :)

At 70, I'm probably overly forgiving of Life's bag marks... MS-64 PL

If it is a PL, then no doubt a 65PL...I gave it a 64 just because the date is not normally forgiven for a PL grade, unless it's a higher grade coin.
