Ya know, you are on to something. I didn’t think of Prooflike, and a badly worn die, but now that you mention it, there are die artifacts all over the obverse. You could be correct that it is Prooflike, and the marks aren’t just a baggy Morgan, but a PL one, with an end of life state die.
The 1881-S dollars were well made and many of them are in Mint State condition. I don't know what the grading services are doing now, but years ago, they were graded very conservatively. I would say that this piece is no better than MS-63 in the holder. It might be an MS-62 if the "gray areas" on Ms. Liberty's cheek and neck look like that in person.
I agree. That's a thing you don't read about in Coin World, but just kind of notice. They were made too good for their own good.
If it is a PL, then no doubt a 65PL...I gave it a 64 just because the date is not normally forgiven for a PL grade, unless it's a higher grade coin.
