Guess the grade on the slab. NGC
PS the grade was not what attracted me to the coin. What did?
This one will get cracked out.

    Is that a worn S?

Looks like a small clipped planchet at K2 and denticles missing on obverse at K3-4.

Or did someone "shave" off some silver for resale?

I agree that the planchet is clipped, but not at K2. It is at K4 where the denticles are weak / missing.

I think the coin looks a little bit cleaned up at the scroll to try and bring out LIBERTY. If not a DETAILS coin, I'd call it VG08.

You made me go back and look at the coin, no there isn't an S mm.
My bad Kevin I thought I responded to you this morning.

The reason for the missing denticles is a small clipped planchet at K-4

To not keep those who responded in suspence I also grade it VG.
The Clipped planchet was the only reason I bought this coin. It is nothing spectacular to look at. The clipped planchet will go nicely in my error collection.
The only thing that NGC said was genuine, typical Stacks W 57th collection.

I'd maybe give it a VG also. But I do wonder why someone paid to have it slabbed...

Thanks for that. I knew that there were two S varieties, one with the MM above and the other with the MM below the ribbon. I thought I saw an S in that piece of 'burnt toast'...just below the bow. I was trying to figure how that got worn faster than the bow and ribbon ends, which normally shouldn't happen, but then again the lettering in HALF and DIME are uneven as well (but pretty typical for a coin in this grade). I'm at a grade of 4 too. The burnish mark on the shield had me a tad suspicious but it's probably normal circulation damage.

I had pondered the thought of the missing details more than once. Did the missing details happen because of the clipped planchet? Then I say no because the wear on the coin is greater than the error, Their is no way that the small amount of metal displacement would cause this much missing details.

For a moment there, I was thinking, "Wow, 1872-H...that's a rare dime!"

I thought the same thing until I compared it with the real deal...

Did I say it wrong, these coins are not my strong suit.

With hand placement, a little greasefill, lighter strike....maybe one got past the three reviewers. A little unlikely, but I was thinking it was a more significant oversight than the clip. P&G has the coin in hand, so that removed any doubt.
