AU 50...from my interpretation of the image: there is wear, the fields have marks, and luster seems to be lacking...but the detail is strong enough to be an AU (vs XF)...(I might be too harsh but that's what I'm seeing in the image)
I picked AU 58. I know nothing about grading coins, that just seemed to be my first thought, and, I just wanted to participate, lol.
And here is the answer. Spoiler: Click here to see the PCGS grade. https://www.pcgs.com/cert/40989236 To those who were discussing the apparent dullness of the surfaces, I would point out that perhaps some (though maybe not all) of that is a byproduct of my photography. Lighting is my Achilles heel when it comes to that.
I think the photos accurately showed the luster and also the high point rub; usually these do not show up this clearly. Nice job on the photos Lord M.
Thanks. I had the devil of a time photographing this one through the plastic, and went through several attempts. This final set of pics is still imperfect but I can live with them. Might send this one in for TrueView and reholder one day, and let the pros photograph it.
The TPGS are way more lenient with 1854/55 gold dollars than with common year dollars. If this coin were from a different year, it would have graded lower.
