I take it that you have an album for a half dime set, not a type coin album. Yes, I know all about the 1802 half dime. It’s the one coin that will forever prevent me from completing my Red Book set of half dime from 1792 to 1805. I have been fascinated with these little coins for well over 50 years. I could not afford my first one until I was settled in my first job after graduating from college. For the next 45 years I worked on the set. Here’s a hint on how tough that set is. The 1795 half dime is the most common date. There are about 35, 1802 half dimes known. The mintage is believed to be 3,000. They range in grade from Fair-2 sharpness with damage to AU by today’s grading standards. In the old days, the best ones were graded EF-45. Northeast Numismatics teased me with one they had on their website for about a year. It was graded VG and was perfect for the grade. At around $155,000, it was over priced by about $30,000, and it didn’t sell. The only way I could have made the deal would been if I had given up one of my core collection coins, and I still would have needed thousands more. Finally it disappeared from the site. I am not sure that it sold.
