    There’s not enough luster for a 55, but not enough wear for a 53. Hmmm...

    I’ll go with AU-53 with a possible bump to 55

    I think it is AU-50 due to the hits near the chin. If the hits are on the holder, AU-55

    AU-53 here as well.

    AU grades are only about wear and not contact marks. So the hits you refer to will not affect the outcome of the grade. If this coin was UNC then the contact marks are considered. This is why you can have very clean and gorgeous AU-58's alongside baggy and beat up AU-58's.

    Borderline 53/55. Since it's PCGS I think they gave it the AU55.

    To me it looks like a weak AU, or what some dealers used to call XF48; really too much wear on the curls for any AU grade. But considering how nice it looks, wouldn’t surprise me to see 53 or even 55!
