I looked at the images again and am back-pedaling. I don't think the coin is mint state . . . I think the fields below the eagle's wings look lifeless and that some of the luster in the wide open fields looks a little unnatural. I'm sorry to even think it, but I'm now leaning in completely the opposite direction, thinking that the coin may have been re-toned after altering the surfaces to make it look UNC.
AU64. I do not think the color should necessarily allow a straight grade, but I would not care even if it were in a Details slab. Drop-dead gorgeous coin, slightly circulated but likely market-graded as low Mint State and probably worth the additional money. These get tough indeed in Mint State, five-figure coins at 65.
Well heck, I can't wait any longer... not the best video, but it is what it is. Old green PCI XF45. 10 digit holder. I paid $305. @ToughCOINS @SuperDave , does this holder calm your nerves in regards to the color?
I was surprised by his first guess. If you wouldn't have mentioned that it graded straight, my guess would have been AU details due to the odd toning. Are you going to submit it to NGC/PCGS?
Personally I would leave it right where it is in the old green PCI holder. As I believe that the specimen as well as the old green holder would net more as is then to bust out and roll the dice on another TPG giving it a better grade.
Idk. May try to cross it, but that's a wild card. Who knows what PCGS will do with it?! NGC only crosses PCGS coins and no other holders, so they aren't even an option.
I'm not considering cracking it out. And you may be right. Those "in the know" know the value and reputation of these old PCIs.
