Ok, another toned GTG on my latest acquisition. It is as close as one can get to a raging monster toned double sided rainbow Jefferson Nickel. It is a 1951 Philadelphia mint, album toned one that I am happy to add to my collection. Pro photos are very accurate as to condition and color. That will be shown in my snapshot at reveal time. Comments and input welcome!
I’ve got to say MS-64 but g to here was no option for the outstanding toning. It is one beautiful coin.
MS 65...some hits that might hurt an untoned coin but the combo of color and what looks like nice luster, should push it up to a 65. (and not 5fs...steps are completely gone under the 2nd and 3rd columns).
I'm going to have to go with AU. Both Jeffersons cheek / jaw area as well as Monticello portico are just too busy with what look like contact marks for me to go higher.
Beautiful coin! I voted 64. I have this '38-D that looks similar that I had graded years ago that landed in that same spot. These old pictures don't do the coin justice.
Any more, before the reveal? Hint— nobody has gotten it yet. What appears to be marks on the reverse are little breaks in the toning, as is common with album toning.
My instinct was 64 but when I saw the hit in the sky above Monticello I downgraded to 63. So I've gotten it wrong with everybody else. The toning is of course phenomenal.
Ok, reveal. It is a 66, according to PCGS. I agree with the grade. It is, to me, in the 65-66 range, and got the color bump. Here is the Trueview, and my iPhone snapshot of the slab, for grade.
66. Should have guessed. Here's his brother, from my collection. This toned in a Dansco for many years. I recently sent it in. Also in a MS66 slab.
