I would say a very high end 64. It is nicely frosty, has some cheek marks, but not distracting. If I were grading it, I would have gone 64+ for the very strong luster, and no significant distraction. A way better than average GSA!!
Definitely very high end 64. Nice Frost. Great strike. Pretty clean devices. No distractions-- I would buy it as a 64+ all day long.
Thanks, if it gets that it would be nice. I have to get away from the common dates, there's so many of them they start all blending together.
I would start with the 1885cc. It is getting more and more pricey, and is one of the biggest sleepers. A few years ago, a nice 64 was about $400. That is no longer the case. I'd go for 1880cc, and 1881cc next. A lot of people collect the " short set" of 1880-1885cc, as the 1879cc and the 1889cc are so expensive. So is the 1893cc-- I spent a ton getting a nice one. 1891cc and 1892 cc are not that bad to obtain. For the 89cc, you will probably have to settle for a circulated date.
I had an 1885 MS66 but it didn't look good enough. It was in an NGC holder, and all my non GSA CCs are PCGS. I didn't know if it would crossover and I got such a good price for it I just flipped it real quick. I was afraid to show everyone because they would say it wasn't worthy . JK, not really. I have an 1880, 1881, a handful of DMPL commons and old holder 64s, a 91 and a coin no one seemed to like here but I thought it was a treasure, a VAM 18 1878. The 1881 needs an upgrade, it has a clean cheek but a distracting mark. That's why I have to stop buying commons, to save up for a 90 or 92 next. Then a 79, 93 and then I rob a bank. Edit: I really should have kept that 85. They are the toughest for me to find.
I think my favorite coins are either toned PL or DMPL coins. They look like stained glass. I have this one, but the toning is very slight.
I was going to do the whole cc dates in ms. Was just collecting too many things and couldn't justify the money for the 89 and the 93. I've become a lot more serious about dealing in coins and am just sticking with the trade dollars and a type set. Tho I have a few monster toned Morgan's I'm holding onto too
I did all but the 1889cc--went for XF 45 on that one. It is fun having the 13 dates. After a while, the novelty did wear off, as I feel that Morgans are losing a bit of their allure to me--perhaps it is so many years as of a collector of them.
Not totally. Doing the tougher cc ones in au. Forget about a 78 cc in ms. With original skin. A much much rarer coin than a 93-s and I'm doing all the Philadelphia ones in proof and business strikes
I've been looking at this coin, it was the 1884 MS63. Now that I took a second look, I really think I got robbed of the PL designation. It's so hard to demonstrate in the holder, but here's a couple of pics.
Chris does quite well knowing better than PCGS NGC and anyone else on the forums quite frequently. Maybe we should all send coins to him to grade.
