i think that there could be a littel bit of fraud here. they say that the coin was carfully removed from a mint set however the photo clearly shows a proof coin. i dont think that this bait and switch is legal it appears that the file photo is what they are claiming came out of the mint set. but what do i know i am not a manipulator of the law.

Ebay is not a problem. I have been buying and selling since 1999. I have both bought and sold coins well into the 4 figures.

    Some things for the newbies.

#1 If a $2000 coin is only being bid and sold for $73 it is a fake (China) and everbody but you knows it.

#2 Fuzzy pictures equal a fuzzy coin. They can claim "my scanner/camera doesn`t show the coin" or " I don`t know how to take pictures" BS and BS again. If you are selling a coin for more than $5, you know how to take picures and or scan. STAY AWAY from fuzzy picture sellers. ALL their pictures are as fuzzy as the "OPINION" of the grade they give.

#3 Yes Feedback counts. Know how to read it. Look at feedback left by sellers, as well as the feedback recieved.

#4 DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!! YES you can find a $1200 coin for $300 if you know your varieties and can do basic grading with a good pic!

#5 Only buy from ebay sellers that have a return policy. "NO QUESTIONS ASKED IF UNOPENED BY BUYER" is preferable. 7-10 days return is normal.

#6 DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CONTACT THE SELLER IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!!! emails sent through Ebays "contact the seller" option is preferable as ebay has a record of it. (they won`t admit to it, but they have a record of EVERYTHING for years and their records can be enforced by a court order if need be)

#7 PRINT OUT EVERYTHING pertaining to both buys and sells, including any emails or questions you have asked or been asked.

#8 EXPERIENCE..... If you are new, try a few low dollar buys or sells, see how ebay works.

#9 YES THERE ARE CROOKS ON EBAY!!!! Both buyers and sellers. CROOK BUYERS as well as sellers. Never send and item to a buyer without insurance (your responsibilty) and Delivery confirmation, Signiture confirmation with higher dollar sales.

There are probably a dozen other things to know about ebay, but these are some of the basics.

Dealing with PAYPAL is another subject......

Buying on ebay can be dangerous and can be very rewarding. Know the seller as much as possible. READ the description. ASK questions before bidding. Make sure the seller has a return policy. Make no assumptions at all, as that can be costly.

The advice from bzcollektor is great. I must add that I have bought a lot of stuff on ebay over the years, not just coins, and this was really the first time I got outright scammed. Maybe that's why I was so ticked.

Here's something else I learned recently- there are people on ebay who "sell" good feedback. You can pick from a menu of different feedback comments for 99 cents a pop! So a true scammer can balance out bad feedbacks with a lot of purchased good ones...

People will always figure out ways new ways to make money, won't they? The tip here being, if you see a lot of generic feedbacks from the same buyer, it might be purchased feedback! Just another reason to check out the feedback very closely! Sheesh!

I do like the fact that this seller informs us in many of their auctions that ikes are expected to go up 200 to 500 in the next five years. Where can I find more useful investment tips? That kind of unsubstantiated bull is always a tipoff for me to stay away.
I think the plays on words in the descriptions and the illustration of that Sac are extremely misleading.

If you paid by paypal, I'd file a SNAD complaint. You could turn their fine print against the seller. The auction states "the coin you get could be a different year". It says nothing about it being a different Mint Mark.

FYI: I filed against her/him also. It seems you ae only allowed to list 15 identical items. It had 27 (still has at the last check). See if eBay actually does anything. I doubt it.

    Yep.

As bzcollektor said, there are plenty of good folks on EBay as well... but they are many hustlers and scam artists as well. Yes, unsubstantiated bull / hype is a red flag.

I like the verbal descriptions on Heritage and, to a lesser extent, Teletrade. Those guys are pros. Though sometime they are a little over the top...

I would like to add to this,

#10 If you are bidding on multipule items and the shipping cost is $4 for each, make sure you know the combined shipping cost for say five items. Often combined shipping deals are not specified in the description(perhaps there are none!) and the seller must be contacted for that information. For cheap coins this can easily be a dealbreaker, you could end up paying double the coin values.

These braindead vendors should be named in the Numismatic Scammers Hall of Shame.

    What do you think?
