I agree. Not theft. I'd have done the same thing. Since when is an even exchange (face value-wise) theft?!

Just finished reading the whole thread...awesome that you got your job back and sounds like the manager got what he deserved. :thumb:

It's okay with me if you don't like my posts. I'm not the one with the problems. My only suggestion to you is to reread the posts by Jim and Clembo. You can either change or continue to be mystified by the unintended consequences. It's your life to live. Welcome to real world 101.

i dont have to change anything....I was obviously right since I got my job back....most of your post are good ....just I have no idea why some reason you think I'm wrong and now I'm a "dishonest person with no ethics and am not gonna make it in life" because I dont understand what your point is and put a dollar in the register for the trade dollar and thats somehow stealing...

Dude, give the kid a break... I think it speaks volumes for his character and work ethic if the owner took the time to call him and offer him his job back, regardless if he knows his son.

I don't remember seeing any posts by you ragging on the folks who work in banks and/or bribe tellers to get silver or collectible coins and bills (and if you have, I apologize) but if you're going to condemn one, you have to condemn them all.

Not everything is black and white, regardless of what the law says... that's why we have people as judges and not computers. :)

The title of your post is "I got fired AGAIN" [caps mine for emphasis]. Do what you want.

Cloud I've read some of your posts, and what seems to be the general consensus, among others, as with my own experiences is that as long as the register has a certain amount of money in it, it doesnt matter what denomination its in.
Heck, I've even told my manager "hey, can I put these twenties in and take this hundred?" and he says yeah sure, as long as the correct amount is in there, it doesnt matter.

I dont think what Stainless did was wrong, he replaced a dollar (granted it cant be used as one, but you dont think the Manager knows that?) with his own. In fact. the company might have lost a dollar assuming it was counterfeit.

    Anyways...

I'm glad things worked out for you stainless. I'm not going to say what you did was right or wrong. Not my place to judge. But I think some very good advice came out of this discussion. Ask your supervisor if it is OK to change your money for coins and bills that come in from the public. As long as you're up front about it I doubt anyone will mind. If they do have a policy against it, at least you know where you stand.

I think kids get too many free passes. Nothing is ever their fault any more. It is my hope that if I can help someone realize that actions have consequences, they might benefit from it. At the same time, I realize that the probability of this is low. That's the way it goes.

I have ragged on people who think the banks are their personal coin shops and complain when the banks don't see it that way. I'm also particularly upset by the posts that start out something like "A senior citizen came in the store today and paid with $100 in silver half dollars and I took them all!" And the person is congratulated with high fives all around for not pointing out to the person that they just lost a lot of money that they might really need. Why should this behavior be congratulated? I like a bargain as much as the next person, but not when it is achieved through deception.

Business gets a bad rap for honesty, but in more than three decades in business, I've never seen as many ethical violations as in the coin business/hobby.

    Congrats, Stainless !
Go back in to work and do a great job.
    ;)

As already mentioned, make sure to talk to your boss about your collecting interests and if exchanging coin and currency is an acceptable practice to him.
I'm sure he'll be fine with it, as long as the drawer balances out.

    cloudsweeper99,

i do see your point and relize your trying to show me what i did was wrong

but, i dont work at a coin shop, i work at a restaurant so this coin actually hurts them....

what would you suggest thats honest then

put the coin in the cash register that way they are $1 short

I am a very honest and good person, so far since I've worked at anyplace I have only been short only a few times(at burger king I was short .17 cents and that was my biggest but it was my first time on the register)

EVERYBODY, he took a FAKE coin in payment and REPLACED it with a REAL DOLLAR. He basically PAID FOR this guy's coffee. He did the restaurant a favor.

This manager sounds like a massive tool...after and incident like this, I wouldn't even accept my job back from a company like this. Ignore all the people here who are crying about what you did and acting like you committed some egregious crime. YOU DID NOTHING WRONG.

    LOL

I was going to say something like that.
I believe I was going to use Dork, but Tool works.
    :D

I was also going to suggest a flaming bag of dog-poo be placed somewhere, but I'll refrain.

What you are missing is that the consensus doesn't matter. It wasn't stainless' decision to make. If he had asked the manager if it was okay to take coins he collects out of the drawer and replace the money, and received approval, the circumstances would have been different. Being a collector of coins doesn't confer any special rights.

You don't know that to be true. Neither did stainless, and he obviously didn't do it in order to do the restaurant a favor. You're rationalizing the behavior.
