The guy who confirmed it was a senior member, Dont listen to anything noncents says.edited and he is a penny man. I am an error coin guy thats what I do. I hunt errors. You are going to get mixed yes and nos because of the dirt. This version has 4 legs it is just a chunk took out of the knee that makes it a 3 1/2. That there should tell you taht some of these gus have no clue , cause they keep saying"I count 4 legs" If you see that come from someone , they are lost.

It quickly provoked some not particularly nice comment......but all entitled to their views. Feel a bit deflated as other rejected it too but I guess a bit of soap or NGC or both.

It's 4.19am here.....so will check the flames when I wake up.....I do think that it might not be well informed to think that the three and a half leg has no bottom part of leg.....I read on the PCGS site that comment is not accurate.

Telling someone to clean a coin.... wow. Yeah, rub that dirt in.

Any expert that agrees "a little soap and a sft rubbing with your fingers helps" must be of the self-proclaimed variety.

"the guy" who is a "senior member" is in actuality an 11 year old child in gradeschool. Was he the "expert" you refer to?? FYI, You can change that label to whatever you want it to say! Oh, but you know that already, don't you?

non-cents has demonstrated his knowledge through his posts. You may not like it, but he knows his stuff.

You, obviously, do NOT. You were fishing for something like this by post #3:
By the way, your price guide. Which guide do you use? I bet you shop for coins with a redbook in your pocket. :pointnlaugh: Price guides mean ballpark estimates of retail prices for graded coins. Redbook prices are generally twice what any raw example will sell for.

marbury518: It is unfortunate that what should have been a nice addition to your collection has now mutated into a disappointing let-down due to the overzealous assertions of yet another newbie posing as some kind of leading authority based on his 102 whopping posts and 6 month membership. This kind of thing happens on any online forum. In the future always try to get a general consensus from the forum members before acting on any coin. Whether it is attribution of an error or variety, or a value, condition/grade, etc.

I see a normal, worn, dirty buffalo nickel. With four normal, worn legs partially obscured by dirt. Since you accepted frankstony's terrible advice to clean it by rubbing soapy water around on it (which, incidentally, would have destroyed any value if it were what he is so sure it is) I advise you to use it for a practice piece on proper conservation.

There are threads here that go in-depth on proper conservation. Most commonly, folks use diluted rubbing alcohol (correct ratio takes practice) or diluted acetone for non-copper coins (again, ratio takes practice). A few seconds submerged followed by a rinse in distilled water. Repeat dip and rinse as needed until desired appearance is achieved. Don't rub any damn coins, ever. The simple act of rubbing a mint state coin with your finger would render it no longer mint state, as it will make any luster go bye-bye and the acids from our sweaty skin start eating away at the coin immediately.

@ frankstony: You unneccessarily raised the OP's hopes far higher than they ever should have been only to have them dashed. There is no reason he should be disappointed with his new coins but I'm pretty sure that's how he feels thanks to you. Why did you do that? To flaunt your "expertise"? For the opportunity to bash those that disagree with you? You just look foolish. I better stop now.....

I am not an authority on US coins and if the coin is not a 1936-D three and a half leg, I accept that. However, I have found one slabbed by PCGS as such on e-bay and I see a front outer leg touching the ground. So I am posting to learn why some comments said it wasn't a three and a half leg as the lower leg was there and touching the ground. So somewhat confused now.

Notice on a true example that the top of the hoof is practically disconnected from the upper portion of the leg where the fur gets bushy? No definition at all; compared to the other front leg which is clearly raised higher. This was caused by mint workers over-polishing the dies to the point where they actually effected the design. They do this in an attempt to subtlely remove imperfections that occur such as a chip in the die. In the case of this coin, their method backfired creating an obvious change to the design.

Then looking at yours: the same portion that should be missing is clearly defined and easy to distinguish, even despite the wear and dirt. Not only is it plainly visible, but it is raised up to the same level as the other front leg.

Wow Frankstony, I really don't appreciate the hate I am getting. I don't "hate on people". I try to educate them. Voicing my opinion should be interpreted as a personal vendetta. This is pretty hypocritical, because it turns out that YOU are the one hating on ME right now. Telling the OP to not listen to anything I say is hurtful, because I do have a lot of good information. I'm not sure what you have against me, I don't think I have wronged you in the past. All I have is a different opinion than you.
I find it hilarious that you called me a "penny man". I don't know if it was supposed to be an insult or what, but it made me laugh. Especially because I collect cents, not "pennies", and there is nothing wrong with that.
If I am not mistaken, you have posted many supposed "penny errors" as well. Does that not make YOU a penny collector?
It doesn't take a "penny man" to see when a Buffalo has 3 1/2 legs or 4.
This is the second time in a month where a member has directly insulted me by calling me names and falsely claiming that I commit actions that I in teality do not. Anyways, I'm going to report your post.
Sorry you folks have to read this, but sometimes members have to stand up for what is right and not let other people bash them down.

Wow, what happened to heated discussions....this forum probably made the top 100. What is the big deal with a little cleaning, each and everyone of you have done it......DILLUTED ALCOHOL, ACETONE... I told the guy to use soap and water. Next time I will advise him to dip it in sulphuric acid for a few minutes. Maybe if you guys would get girlfriends or a corvette then you could compensate for the lack of something your missing....I on the other hand have a life besides cherrypicking. Its what normal people call a hobby. With that said I can keep posting pics all day of 3 1/2 leg buffalo nickels, and they will all have 4 legs to the naked eye. I'm sticking to my guns on this one and going with the 11 year old. He knows more than most. I would consider making him moderator.

Noncents, I was not bashing you. Look above your head and look at what it says, Lincoln Variety Expert, now if it said Buffalo Nickel Expert, then I would agree with you. When it comes to pennies you know your stuff, but you dont take your mother-in-law to see a vet when she gets sick....we need a nickel man.
