Might be night time there...about 8 pm their time? Might be having a pint at the pub. :)

Buffalo Nickels are notorious for being weakly struck. I believe it has something to do with the hardness of nickel as a metal - which is why they used it as a shielding material during WW2, and why we switched to silver comp. at that time.

Gotta love the connection this hobby has to history!

Amen, I had 14 Jefferson nickels (wartime Nickels) and I sold them for scrap. I had no idea at the time what I had. More than likely Ihad the whole set. DAMN....DAMN.....DAMN

Actually, I had an afternoon snooze! lol. Any name isn't Brit, it's my nationality and I'm a him not a her. Got that out the way but very thankful for all the replies and info. Unfortunately, I can't usually contain myself after an auction win and post the scans before getting them in hand. I won these today at thesalesroom auction portal and won't get them until later next week. I will take good quality scans and post them here. Thanks again, marbury518

Wasn't sure where to post this but just bought a very large group of coins which look to have quite a bit of silver in there and in addition to the Indian and Canadian, etc there looks to be a number of US coins. Any keen eyed members might be able to tell through size comparison if they are Kennedy halves or not.....thanks.marbury 1196-2013219124932_468x382[1].jpg

Looks like a few Kennedy's in there, but I'm sure they'll turn out to be clad. I don't think you'll find too much silver, but it's still an interesting mix.

There are definitely some Kennedy halves in there... From the picture I can only make out a bicentennial, but I can see others in there.

Weird hordes of coins you find at auction there.
This one has lots of foreign and holed coins. Some US. I see a Roosevelt dime and a few quarters as well as the JFK. They all look clad to me. The pound is about a $1.50 right now. What did you pay for this? And how much does it weigh?

The coins with a hole in are made that way, so not sure I'd call them holed..........I paid about £50 hammer for the whole lot...no idea how much they weigh.....some of the colonial indian coins in there are actually quite popular with collectors and would pay for my expences I feel........I took a risk and we'll see if it pays off or not..........there was another lot of 6 Morgans at the same sale and I did not bid as the reeding just looked suspect....

The Kennedy's were 90 percent silver in 64, but they were also silver up until 70 or 71. Im sure someone else knows the exact date but they were 40 percent silver up until 70 or 71

Marbury, what time is it where your at?

Since I am talking to myself, I looked it up. The kennedy Halves were silver up untill late 1970. They were 40 percent silver from 65-70 and possibly 71. If you find a 71 silver then I would say it would be worth 6 or 7 figures since it would be a transitional error.

It's just after 6pm here.......have so many coins arriving next week I really need to stop and see what I actually have........easier said than done.....

Do you have a link to the original photo? Not much I can tell from the low res shot given here...although there are definitely some US coins in there, and looks like there is also some silver in the lot...just difficult to verify what's what.

The 1970 silver clad Kennedy halves were only available in mint and proof sets...they weren't released for circulation. Just thought I'd add that bit on.

Looks like a fun lot, though!

I mentioned the 71 but the 77 could also be 40 percent silver. There was an expert here in the US that stated that in 71 and 77 a few 40 percent silver planchets were used( either by mistake or maybe they just ran out of the other) but you should be able to tell by looking at the edge. Silver will not have that red in the edge

What about the 1970 D and the 1970 S they were 40 percent silver. Where did you come up with the idea that the 1970 silver was only released in SMS?
