Very nice 5 - kroner. This coin was as you say struck for the US - forces stationed on Greenland during the war. After the war they where withdrawn, because they did not fit into the danish pattern of denominations. But then, afteD denmark introduced a 5 - kroner - coin in 1961 they where re- issued and once more withdrawn together with the other Greenland - coins in 1967. I believe this makes the polar bear 5 - kroner the only coin wich has been issued and withdrawn twice.
Fabulous...absolutely fabulous coins Collect89. Greenland is one my favorites. Here's a few I picked up when I was a kid from my uncle's newspaper machines and a more recent one from a junk bin find. I found these in the newspaper machines circa 1970's
Purchased this one on eBay in the late 1990's for $10 Found this one recently (last year) in a foreign bin for $.25
I overpaid on this one. Thought it was a Greenland issue at first and then came to find out it was from Denmark. Oh well, I like Danish coins as well.
In a way, everybody did ... voluntarily. The coin was a fundraiser as far I know - face value 2 kroner, sold at a price of 5 kroner. In 1952 the royal couple (King Frederik and Queen Ingrid) visited Greenland, and a little later the Dronning Ingrids (Queen Ingrid's) Hospital was founded there. The revenue from that coin issue supported fighting tuberculosis. Note that the pieces were first issued on 27 May 1953, one day before the constitutional referendum in that year which also changed the legal status of Greenland. Christian
Thule - Kap York There was a trading station in Northwest Greenland founded by Knud Rasmussen in 1910. Rasmussen was a Danish polar explorer and anthropologist. I believe that He bought the schooner "Kap York" for the Thule station in 1913. This Thule Kap York trading post is located way up north. According to Krause, the Thule Kap York money circulated from 1914 to 1937, but the all the minor coins bear the date of the founding year. The larger 5 & 10 Kroner denominations bear a 1932 date. Like the Greenland Mining Corp tokens previously posted in this thread, the Thule Kap York tokens were also produced by L. Chr. Lauer, Nürnberg, Germany.
