I am not too picky as a collector, but I have an interest in pretty much all coins. I have wanted an old Greek coin for awhile, but have been outbid on the ones I tried for. I finally got this one and just wanted to post it. These are the sellers photos, I will try (with my limited skills) and see what I can do later. Greek Mysia, Parion, 500-475 B.C., AR Drachm, Gorgonion Face.
Its a Thracian imitation of Parion Mysia Gorgion. Nice coin. Read more about it here. http://medusacoins.reidgold.com/parion.html
Sweet pickup, Kentucky ... very cool indeed (congrats) man, I love ancient imitative examples ... they're like a double-whammy => they're kinda like an ancient-coin and a counterfeit-coin all rolled into one!! ... sadly, I don't have an official, or an imitative example (yup, you guessed it => I need to buy more coins!!) Ummm, but I do happen to have a couple of other Gorgon examples (wanna see 'em?) ... okay, here they are ... Sicily, Selinos, AE Cast Tetras 450-440 BC Gorgon Face & Selinon Leaf Mysia Parion, AR Hemidrachm 400-300 BC Gorgon & Bull on Grain Ear Sinope, Paphlagonia AE22 120-63 BC Medusa & Nike w palm Cilicia, Soloi, AE25 100-30 BC Aegis/Gorgon & Aphrodite riding Bull
Yeah, but I note the modern fakes are at 3.0 and 3.2 g If it is a Thracian copy, what would be the time frame. Not bad for under $20.
Probably close to their Mysian parents - late 5th to early 4th centuries BC. The fabric looks ok from those pics - I don't think it's fake, but if you could post higher resolution images, that would be helpful.
=> that sounds pretty good (most of my Thrace examples are between 300 and 500 BC ... again, that baby is super-old) ... very cool addition
