It's still kind of in effect just not as an openly sactioned "hit squad" and not with the same people as far as I know. Those guys were all pissed as hell when ebay disbanded them.
Anybody today, who purchases an expensive coin unholdered by an internet seller, is taking a chance. If you can inspect the coin in hand (dealer, show) that's a different story. In defense of the seller, they do offer a thirty day money back guarantee.....anybody here ever take them up on it? I, for one, wouldn't touch their 'wares' given all of the negative speak in these forums..........
I don't know about "hit squad", but their hit rate appears to be terribly low. I used to Watch auctions that I reported to see if they went away, but I finally gave up in disgust, because they almost never did. And these were the most egregious auctions, Play-Doh classic commemoratives, $50 1889-CC Morgans and the like.
When I was using eBay heavily I had quite a few legitimate graded coins by the top 3 TPGs removed by that old group for not being authentic. They may have meant well but they had a lot of misses with their actions as well.
Really? In top 3 plastic? China wasn't even faking slabs back then. At least not to the point they are now with ones that are so damn close it takes a well trained eye to notice. That's strange. I once had a prada purse ebay killed saying it was fake. I sold it a week later to an expert in the area that resold name brand bags for $1100. Could've got closer to $2k on eBay for it though. That really pissed me off.
Most were PCGS (some even had TrueViews attached to them and one was a CAC coin) and a couple were ANACS. All of them were coins I sent in myself so there was no question they were legitimate. I suspect someone selling something similar may have been trying to get the listings killed and they went with it. Kind of ironic how many real listings get killed while the fake ones just keep going. I had the same thing happen with a pair of Ray-Bans I no longer wanted. Seems like brand name stuff gets killed a lot if you aren't a retail style seller.
I've never heard an ill word about their willingness to make returns right in more than ten years of watching them closely. They're doing it "right," in the sense of keeping their noses clean. Not_a_single_thing they do is prosecutable under any law; the words on a TPG slab are, under the law, One Man's Opinion in an arena wholly governed by subjectivity. That's one reason why it's so difficult to take a seller like that down - there's no "offense" to hang on them. That's why I find it so amusing when people rant about filing suit against TPG's regarding grading matters, or similar. It's like suing a restaurant critic for disliking your cooking. And until we, as numismatists, move against sellers like that in united fashion, there won't be a way to stop them. Their customers don't post at places like this. I've no doubt there are hundreds of blissfully-unaware collectors who have thousands upon thousands of dollars invested in some pretty ugly surprises down the road.
Why is so much suspicion thrust upon all uncertified coins? Are we now all cowards that hide behind TPGs? My opinion, this coin is genuine and proof, possibly with natural toning. GSC is known for overgrading their coins and enhancing their photos to make the coins seem better than they are. They guarantee authenticity and 30-day satisfaction, only.
It's not offered for the good of the customer or collector, or even as good and proper business, but as a means of self-preservation.
Cus coins that are presented to look like they should be mid 4 to 5 figure coins aren't sold raw anymore and certainly not raw on ebay
Hey look, I'm not defending these guys. Just pointing out that an knowledgeable soul might be able to redeem himself.
Hey, look... I know you're not and certainly didn't intend to imply as much. The only point was that a very generous return policy is an integral part of their MO. Aside from those who simply don't know any better and continue to buy (from this or other dreck peddlers), it allows unhappy customers a quick, easy, and painless out that's much less likely to result in a negative/poor feedback, complaints, etc, plus it makes them look good.
Oh dear. I see we're arguing about the uninitiated.......courage under fire........they'll prevail......eventually.
