What happens when it gets sold - either by you after upgrading, or by your heirs somewhere down the road? Even marking the 2x2 "Tobacco stained" won't guarantee that the deception will be revealed every time the coin changes ownership!
Agreed, it's not toned, it's just layed with a residue. This little trick is older than I am, it's been used for decades.
I too admit the coin does look better after that smoked procedure. Almost any coin would look better with that darkening effect than the cleaning appearance though. I'd worry about the long term effects myself. Note that like anything else, smoke from cigaretts, pipes, cigars differs from product to product. Tars, Nicotine, miscellaneous other substances in the tobacco may end up effecting the coin in the future. The layering of the staining material on that coin may tend to continue effecting the metal over a long term. Not sure if any of us will remember but I suggest you retake a photo of that coin in a year or two and post again, just in case. I still think the best way to down effect cleaning a coin is to allow it to sit on a kitchen window sill for several months.
OK. We all need to step back and catch our breath. I know it's a coin, and I know how fondly people think of them, but this quarter is only worth a couple bucks tops. The cigar probably cost more than the coin. The OP could have spray painted it and would only be out the price of the paint.
