Submitted raw coin to GC with the understanding of 4 to 8 weeks time for PCGS grading. It's been more like 12 to 14 weeks and counting (they've had the coin longer than I !!) which GC attributes to a "backlog" at PCGS. I spoke with a rep from GC and she assured me she'd pursue the issue but with economy submissions, they have a tendency to be moved to the back of the line. This is a first time experience with GC, more than likely the last as the reputational luster has been somewhat tarnished.
12 to 14 weeks sounds pretty typical unless you paid for one of the express services. I think you are blaming the wrong company.
Were you planning on selling it? I don't think they do submissions for people unless they are going to auction them afterwards. I could be wrong. You can get on the PCGS site and look at the turnaround times. Just because GC sent it in does not guarantee a faster turnaround.
To be fair, GC has no control over PCGS. They actually save you money on postage and grading fees. If you do it all on your own, you pay postage and insurance three times. GC takes your coins to PCGS and picks them up after grading. They are very close to each other. This has saved me about $1000 over the past 2 years. I'm sure GC will see and read this thread but they have no control over how long the grading takes.
That sounds like a normal wait time these days for most grading companies. I don't think it is the GreatCollections' power to change that. And besides, why would they want to delay the sale since that's how they make money?
PCGS is a company completely independent of GC. So, GC can only try to persuade them to move faster, which might have no effect. All GC can do is state how fast PCGS has moved in the past, which is no guarantee of current conditions. If you are really in a hurry to have a coin graded, send it directly to PCGS in one of the higher and more expensive tiers. Then send it to GC for auction. In the lowest tier, I’ve had PCGS take 4-5 months. Mike
Well - it might be you last submission to GC, but try it with another auction house. Then compare the costs and wait times. I am not sure it will be any better or cheaper. Patience is a virtue at times to make the most on some coins. Based of my experience I will continue to use GC. The way I look at things is when I want cash quick I sell to the local shop - they are fair and I know how they price coins when buying. I do know this - when I sold at auction at heritage it took 6 months and all my coins were already graded. My coins were spread across multiple auctions. So I had to wait to get some of them listed for a platinum night, then some were spread across multiple other auctions. While it was not bad it just took time.
