As a fan of toned coins, I was following the action tonight. The results were strong. Multiple coins beat their previous result at Legend (some having sold just earlier this year). Anyone else follow these or win anything? Here is a sample 1884-O....3,172.50 (2020) vs 5,236.88 https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...ar-PCGS-MS-65-CAC-Roadrunner-Collection-Toned https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lot/76025913/-1-1884-o-pcgs-ms65-cac/ 1885-O....3,290.00 (Jan 2022) vs $5,231,25 https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/1186901/1885-O-Morgan-Silver-Dollar-PCGS-MS-65-CAC-Toned https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lot/109496961/-1-1885-o--pcgs--ms65--cac/ 1887...2,937.50 (2020) vs 7,281 https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...lar-PCGS-MS-67-CAC-Roadunner-Collection-Toned https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lot/73044057/-1-1887-pcgs-ms67-cac/ 1888....1,762.50 (2020) vs 4,361.62 https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...ar-PCGS-MS-66-CAC-Roadrunner-Collection-Toned https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lot/66993604/-1-1888-pcgs-ms66--cac/ I liked this 85-O the most among those four but was blown out.
Bought just one coin last night, it wasn't a toner, and it was quite reasonable. Those coins are pretty, but the premiums are sickening.
I wasn’t following them. I don’t pay much attention to Morgans. Those are all nice coins but to me none of them are special enough to warrant those prices.
IMO, this is not indicative of any beating or result by a previous entity. I do understand the thrust of the thought, but I don't particularly think it indicates strong, except that coins that have been awarded a CAC designation have a greater mathematical chance of being sold for a higher price.
Good news. I've recently listed my '85-O toner on the bay, to test the waters. I feel my '85-O looks better than that 65+. I'd be very happy with that kind of price.
It was the same coins with the same stickers. There were more examples too but I just picked four. Legend gets high prices and this just shows that GC is on par or even better lately when it comes to toned coins (particularly Morgans in the sub $10k range-which is a good portion of them).
Or, does it mean CAC gets high prices, that keep climbing in this active period we are experiencing? But I get your point, and in general, I do think that GC has the lead in advertisement and promotion, and ease of purchase and fee structure. I do think there will be better buys $ wise on the ANA Bourse, in anticipation of the heavy auctions coming up. I have read projections in the 75-80 Mil range.
100% agree with that. GC website is so much easier to navigate than heritage. If I could only pick one of the two auction houses to buy from I’d pick GC without question. On top of the superior website, Ian seems like a genuine, down to earth guy compared to that arrogant, pretentious person at Heritage.
Those are some gorgeous coins. The 1885o used to be mine. I sold it in 2017, for $899. It was a PCGS MS 65, with no plus, and no CAC. The new owner had it regraded, and it paid off.
CAC has a role in the increasing prices. Toning has just as big (if not bigger) role when it comes to these examples. Non-CAC toned Morgans are generally bringing stronger prices too (I've bought some and lost out on a lot more). As far as the ANA show, we will see. I foresee mostly strong asks as dealers see what auctions bring and might struggle to replace inventory.
GC is definitely easier to use. Ian is also great. GC will reply to your questions and they ship much quicker than Heritage (plus the shipping fees are often lower).
I did not. It was PCGS MS 65, no plus, and no CAC. It was regraded, and CAC’d by the previous owner, between 2017, and 2021. I posted it here back in 2014, I believe, in an older PCGS holder. I always thought of it as a 64-65 Morgan with very nice level 4 out of 6 toning.
