    Who needs a metal detector?
No bubble gum on the reverse, nice find.

Does the edge say NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSITE? I had dozens of those I gave out as gifts after my UK trip. I really like piedfort type coins.

You are mixing them up, the old round £1 coins had edge lettering, the new 2017 £1 coin is 12 sided and bimetallic with no lettering.

    Old round coins

    New 2017 bimetallic

One time I found six British pound coins in a California Coinstar machine.

    Dates 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994, 2000, and 2001.

    Made my day.

    :)

I have a few hundred pounds worth saved up from mixed lots that I didn't exchange or sell back when it was higher :(

Anybody have any examples of counterfeits or diagnostics to ID them? As common as they’re supposed to be I’d expect to have at least one.

I had a few old £1 coins passed to me in change, if you examined them you could usually tell they were fake.
The alignment was never correct, real ones were struck in medal alignment, the fakes were always out by about %30.

I've not heard of or seen any fakes of the new issues.

I did get a fake bimetallic £2 coin a few weeks ago, it was given to me by my local newsagent, he thought it was an error coin and he saved it for me.
It is the only one I have seen.
The alignment and weight is spot on but the strike is weak and the colour is just wrong.

I could see its a newer coin with the bimetal. Was wondering if the edge was the same. I like the translation I just read. "No one attacks me with impunity." Shame they changed the edge.

There were 9 different edge inscriptions on the old £1 series depending on the obverse design.

    Here`s 3 of them.
    1. DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning 'An Ornament and a Safeguard'
Used on British, English and Northern Ireland designs.
    2. NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT, meaning 'No-one provokes me with impunity', which is the Latin Motto of the Order of the Thistle.
      Used on Scottish designs.
    3. PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD, meaning 'True am I to my country', taken from the Welsh National Anthem.
      Used on Welsh designs.
