Grand Duchy of Finland

During XII-XIX centuries Finland was a sweden territory. After Russian-Sweden war 1808-1809, Finland was conquered by russians and became a Grand Duchy within Russian Empire until 6 december 1917.
Russian Administration minted a Finnish coins since 1864 until 1917. It is rather rare coins in USA, i think.
So i introduce them for You, gentlemans.

Currency system of GD of Finland was very simplex: 1 markka = 100 pennia.
You see 1 penny 1912, copper, Nicolas II the Emperor. 1,28 g., size - 15 mm, 2450000 coins of this type.

 

1. 5 pennia 1873, copper, 6,4 g., size - 25 mm, 1000000 coins of this type. Alexander II the Emperor.
2. 5 pennia 1916, copper, 6,4 g., size - 25 mm, 4470000 coins of this type. Nicolas II the Emperor.

 

Coins of GD of Finland are beautiful, isn"t it? Look at the 10 pennia 1916, copper, 12,8 g., size 30 mm, 6392000 pieces. Nicolas II the Emperor.

 

After February"s Bourgeois Revolution 1917 in Russia, new russian bourgeois Government mint a new Finnish coins. Look at the 10 pennia 1917, copper, 12,8 g., 30 mm. Eagle without crown.

 

1. 25 pennia 1916, silver .750, 1,2747 g., 6392000 pieces. Nicolas II the Emperor.
2. 50 pennia 1914, silver .750, 2,5494 g., 600000 pieces. Nicolas II the Emperor.

 

And at last, 50 pennia 1917 (russian bourgeois Government mint), 2,5494 g., silver .750, 570000 pieces. Eagle without crown.

5 pennia 1917, copper, weight - 6,4 g., size - 25 mm, mintage - unknown. Coins of that type were circulated in 1917 only.

i bought quite a lot of the pre 1917 coins a few years ago when i visited helsinki, and i soon had a terific collection of finnish coins up to the first euro issues.

 

Finnish coins are very beautiful, I think. But I mean an old coins. A coins that were minted in 1970-80th are rather simple and not very nice.

 

i agree but the exception was the 5 markka with the seal on the obverse........

Here's the 5 Markka coin. I think this is the best Finnish coin I've seen.

 

Hm... I suppose that old Finnish coins are better than modern... But this 5 markka coin is pretty nice too.

 

A nice group of Finland Duchy coins! I especially like how the copper coins of this period tone.

 

Republic of Finland.
1 penni 1923, copper, weight - 1 g., size - 14 mm, mintage - 990000 pcs. Engraver: Isaac Gustaf Sundell. Such coins were released at 1919-1924.
