Yeah I hear you. Its why I left moderns as well. They care way to much about its condition, and way too little about what it IS. I care about the artistry, the history, the iconography, the social situation in which the coin was struck. I could give a rat's behind if its a "MS65" versus a "MS66" or other such gobblygook nonsense. The grade competition seems to be more about the owners epeen than anything else, basically just another pissing contest.
I see the I see the logic here. I was attempting to address the numerical/abbreviated grade that was being assigned; while stating my opinion on that system at the same time. The writing is not clear with this one... :/
I greatly admire the concept for relating the grades and prices as originated by Dr. Sheldon but time and the market made his numbers obsolete. He realized the strangeness of paying more than a cent for a cent and the hobby had its disagreements even in his day. He did not call his book 'Penny Whimsy' for nothing. It turned out that everything Shelton touched turned out to be a victim of time and changing definitions of correctness. The coin grading system turned out to be his most long lasting work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Herbert_Sheldon
