I was just wondering the grade on this 1909 ihc that i have. Also I wanted to ask about breaking coins out of their slabs. I'm pretty set on breaking out this 1907 ihc but if anyone wants to talk me out of it feel free to do so. Anyways, I am wondering how to safely break the coin out of its NGC slab with out damaging it of course. Does anyone have a link to a How-to video please share. Also the reason I am breaking it out is i want to display it in my capital plastics holder with the other ihc's i have. If anyone wants to have some fun you could take a stab at the grade for the 1907 and guess how much I paid, since i was pretty happy that I got a good deal... but don't look at ebay completed listings! I don't have any qualms with you breaking out the 1907. Looks like a 64 BN and would grade that all day. I've used a dremmel to cut the slab in half, and sometimes more primitive methods of opening it.
Yeah looks like a 63/64bn to me. Below is my tools of choice. The snippers crack the slab and the little screw driver pries the slab open. PS - the lighter is not needed, but the mountain dew is - something to steady the nerves. Easy once you do it a few times.
thanks for the replies, the 1907 is a ms64 BN, the 1909 is raw and i'm not sure what specific grade it is. I'm still having trouble picturing how exactly i would crack the slabs open... i'm considering buying a cheap coin to practice on though.
I line it up so the edge will cut in the bottom of the label, I never let the flat part get near the coin. I usually have to do it on both sides. And on PCGS I usually end up with a label side and the coin side. Then I use the little screw driver to just pop one side of the slab off. Then I pull the ring and coin out. I then do the same of the label. I keep the labels with my album. NGC slabs sometimes are a little tougher to crack. Then I might have to get creative. BUT ALWAYS take your time and avoid the coin. You do not want to scratch it or anything. I know on one NGC slab I had to snip some of the edges around the label before I could pry half the slab off.
