I've heard this too. It's funny how people ridicule the competition. Judging from your reputation in the business, the dealer you use is probably a PCGS or NGC submission center. If you used ANACS or ICG he would lose the "kickback" he possibly gets - at least that's went on in the past. For anyone interested, I just called PCGS to refer a customer with a pretty good looking 1943 1c that he got in change (that's the story) as a paper boy in 1950. Without knowing the coin's history, PCGS "telephone girls" insisted he join their club before sending the coin in. Heck, I should think for a front page story (on the chance it was authentic) they should have let him send the coin in and just be satisfied with the large fee they would charge. If he was a collector or was not an old man w/o a computer or access to a coin dealer; I guess I could see their point - company policy robots. I think he is sending it to ICG or ANACS.
For those of you who don't know this...Heritage formerly sent coins - especially those with problems - to ICG and continued to do it for years UNTIL NGC started using "Details" grades! Perhaps they were just trying to "slip" something past the professionals there...LOL. I've heard Heritage has a personal problem with individuals at ICG. Same for CAC. Anyone know for sure? Anyway, we live in a free country (at the moment) and everyone is entitled to use any TPGS they wish. IMO, NGC/NCS is the best.
John Roberts (ANACS) and Randy Campbell (ICG) are equals IMO. ANY competent numismatist with a computer and VAMWORLD can attribute a Morgan Dollar. Even I can do it. ONLY DIFFERENCE is the amount of TIME it takes me and those two professionals. That is the difference experience and knowledge brings to the table. Time is money.
You are right. But you are handicapping yourself a lot by using a just a photo taken with the light in one position. As you know, it is easier when you can tip and rotate the coin using good light and magnification. I stopped playing GTG for that reason. I HATE TO BE WRONG
Is it an 1879-S with the 1878 reverse? In case you don't know, look on the reverse side. See the arrows? Look at the top feather... 1878 reverse... 1879 reverse... More info: http://www.vamworld.com/1879S+Rev+78
If that is actually true I seriously doubt that started on CACs end. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who would CAC treated them in anything but a professional manner. They'll even give feedback on why things do not sticker if you request it and sometimes even when you don't.
I agree. I know John Albanese, and at least one of the graders up there personally. I have nothing bad to say about the company. I have actually talked with John about ICC and CAC stickers. I did not get a satisfactory answer from him, just a promise to consider my request. So, blame me for listening to rumors. After all, if it were my company, the more coins the more money! It's a no brainer. Perhaps if a bunch of ICG and ANACS coins got CAC stickers it might take some business away from the top two services. Why pay more money for slower turnaround and sometime spotty customer service if the CAC sticker levels the field? Dah...You think there may be something going on behind the scene? I've also talked with the Director of Heritage Auctions and the owner of Great Expectations about ICG. Ditto. Why not make more money by accepting all the grading services. I OWN COINS FROM ALL the four major services. I buy the coin and not the label. I've never had any dealer refuse to buy a slabbed coin from any service IF MY PRICE WAS RIGHT I just want my ICG coins to "automatically" increase in value once they are accepted at CAC, Heritage, and GE, that's all.
They won't start stickering ICG or ANACS just like Photo Seal won't. It would hurt their companies credibility or bury them financially on the buy side for their stickers. The market has vastly different pricing from ICG/ANACS to PCGS/NGC and in all honesty all of the high end stuff that the stickers were initially targeting are basically already in the PCGS/NGC slabs anyway. But they can't have x buy price for PCGS/NGC coins and y buy price for ICG/ANACS just like that couldn't pay the same price for those two groups and expect not to be buried in some of them. Granted with the stickered coins the gap would close some, but it would likely take a gold sticker to actually equalize it. As much influence as they have it isn't enough to try and upend the market nor is there really any incentive to do so. Even if they did start accepting them the stickering rate would likely be miserable for the same reasons. Great Collections will sell ICG coins, it is just not an option to submit through them on their submission forms for raw coins.
