When I see those "rubs" or slight discoloration on the high points, I first look to other toned areas and see if there is a color match, If it doesn't flash, I look to the die state and try to match the die wear. A full but incomplete strike will cause, a dull luster on the high points "in theory". To me, because of your "Perty" photos I believe this sat in a collection for a very long time and is original Mint state
Nice Jefferson. Yeah, Tom does have a cut on his jaw. But overall, it seems to be a sharp coin. I say MS65, but I would not bet money on my pick.
I graded the coin as I would had I not known that Lehigh owned it. I agree with Lord M that the coin looks like a super slider and could go either MS or AU. I see no way to tell which it is without seeing the coin in hand. That said, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and said MS. With that gash on TJ’s neck, 65 is tops, and eye appeal from the pics is only fair, so I said MS-64.
Mine is a guess, it looks like there are a fair amount of rub marks on the nickle . It still is a very nice coin good pick !!
My initial look at the coin was MS64. I think it has lovely surfaces and lovely color...but that big hit on the front limits it from going any higher IMHO. Unfortunately, I tend to agree with everyone else that the presence of slight wear is so hard to tell with this one. It could be an AU58...I just can't tell. I personally don't believe it will get higher than MS64 with that hit but if the colors are nice enough and high enough eye appeal...it might. But, I have to make up my mind and pick a grade...no more waffling around. Unfortunately, my grade is not on the list. So...here is what I say NGC will grade it: MS64* I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and say it is uncirculated and thus deserves an MS grade. I think the hit on the face limits it to a 64 but the eye appeal of the toning and the otherwise overall cleanliness of the coin gives it outstanding presentation for a 64. Therefore, I will say it earns a star.
I think it's every bit MS. That obverse die was obviously wearing-away, aged, and they don't strike-up that crisp for that. I actually like the toning, and although I think it's a technical MS65, I think I'd hold out for the MS66 money, or no deal.
I looked at this very early this morning on the poll gave it a 66 as the only hit is on the Jaw line. This is a difficlt one to nail down. It sort of reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where the girl he was dating looks kept changing everytime he looked at her....one moment very pretty the next ah not to hot! Since grading is subjective I'm going to stick with my first answer a MS 66 . And my no means pass on purchasing this coin if it had been available to me. Even though she a bit of a mystery I find the strike and color very pleasing to my eye.
I have to say, I was too high, but after reading the comments, it would, I think be possible to get a MS66. Though no guarantee. I am happy to practice and start looking more closely at all the things others mention. Maybe in a couple years I will be somewhat good at it.
I would give it a 64 grade; the obverse device mark would keep me from grading it higher. I once had one graded 66 and it looked much better with more detail in the steps.
I feel like this might be a loaded question, ive seen some butt ugly/weak/incomplete Jeffs grade ultra high. So with that in mind i gave it a 67. Since this IS A KEY, im guessing the grade on the slab is much much lower. Overall i like the coin and would welcome it in my box of 20, especially if its an undergraded 63/64 Sidenote- there is NO way that that, shaving nick, should keep it out of a superb gem holder.....imho ofcourse
It’s a beautiful coin and an excellent addition. I hope it grades the minimum 66 that you hope for. I believe if it gets the AU58 it will also garner a * I think as an AU58* it would bring the same money as a 66 anyway. It would be an excellent CAC submission if it does receive in fact the AU58*
Nice find.. reverse is classic for this type the scratch on jaw does throw it off but toning and overall condition is gorgeous..MS64+
Oh, good. Glad it's not just me. Yes, a head-scratcher for sure, and I stand by my earlier concern over the "shaving cut", but perhaps I was too conservative in my grade estimate. I'll be the first to admit I'm far from a Jefferson nickel specialist. I know good eye appeal when I see it, though, and that coin's got it.
I think the duller high points are from some thick toning, not wear. The luster in the fields really looks full - if there was enough wear on the high points to cause that appearance, the fields would not look like that. The gash on the jawbone limits this to a max of 65. Except for the fingerprint on the reverse, this appears to be an attractive coin.
I see heavy marks on Jefferson's jaw, above the Monticello, and under TRUST. IMO, those limit it to MS-64. As for wear, I can't tell from the pictures. If you can't tell in hand, well I'd say it is up to the TPG gods.
