A coin has to have a decent strike to make 65, and it is has to be well struck for the date and mint to make it 67 and above I believe. I could be off though. (I know I almost always say that, but when I don't, it seems those are the times that I'm wrong. :D)

A coin should be fully struck for the issue to grade MS-65

    Now you all interpet that;)

The thing now is for the TPG's to intrepret that. ;)

Got it from numiscent. He said that he had no idea why PCGS did call it red. I agree that it should be red. PCGS said 64RB. The 64 I agree with, but the RB I don't get.

BTW, Doug, I see no wear on it. Don't know why my pic looks that way.

If the coin has no wear then I would agree with the 64 RB. But those pics - boy what a difference. Just proves what has been said many times, that pics can be very deceiving.

The line across the forehead I had pegged as a light die crack. The hits are hits, no gettin around that, but they are in line with a 64. And the coin is definitely RB.

Jack - not sure what you are referring to when you ask what were they thinking ?

" What were they thinking "??

A cpl of coins that do not apply to this thread.

My " quick mental thoughts " that run thru my head, I just blurted them out.

Hopefully , they will help those to " think ahead" when selling coins , AND when purchasing them.

I'll admit it here and public. I got my A kicked by PCGS this last month, several did not grade that I thought would grade a solid MS-XXX. Several graded that I shot the moon on and expected BB's. Go figure, it is totally unpredictable what they will do.

If I seem to contradict myself, I am doing that. It is an unexplainable thing. You get comfortable and go for it only to get whacked.......You tighten up and they give the MS grades away.

Every time I try and grade a coin based on pics lately I end up kicking myself in the head it seems.

I bought a coin from a major auction house recently based on pics, it was slabbed. I bought it, just about instantly regretted it, felt like I paid a lot less than I had budgeted, and looking at the pics again I was unhappy.

Then I finally held it in my hand. You know what? I like it :)

Then I bought another off of teletrade that I loved in the pics and, meh, not so much in person.

64 or 65 RB -- I'm torn. Also, those areas of "darkness" aren't wear, they're mellowed mint red, IMHO.
