    I've post these coins before in other catagories, but not in Got Wood? So, hope everyone is fine with my repeat pic posting. They belong here as well! picture 1647.jpg picture 1649.jpg Picture 449.jpg Picture 451.jpg

    No too good. The large cents are made of pure copper. It is a bit hard to get pure copper improperly mixed. Having said that, it was also 1830's refining so "pure" to them may not be "pure" by today's standards. What does the other side look like? I would probably conclude that a normal reverse would mean the stripes are environmental. However, if there are corresponding stripes on the reverse (no matter how weak), it has got to be a woody.

    Although woodies don't add to the value of a cent, I would rather purchase a woodie for my collection. They add character and eye appeal! A woodie collection is a must.

    The other side is, I would say pretty normal. Based on your thoughts above, you are likely correct it may be environmental. I will have to get some better lighting and look at that reverse once again. Still nice to look at in any case. I wonder if anyone has seen any woody large cents though.

    The do for a woody collector. I've paid above the going price many times for wood.

    BadThad, Before you ran this link. Most collectors I've ran across in local estate coin and online auctions, most look at a woody to be a defective planchet. And, stepped away from bidding too high! Most bow out just lower than the coins value. I have alot of these woodies, and hope to obtain alot more.

    My latest came today;

    BTW, anyone think I should try grading this one (i.e., does it have a shot at 65)?

    I don't think it'd grade higher than 64.....woody penalty. It's a VERY NICE woody though!!!

    I love when that happens! Dealers discount them too. That's an advantage to being a woody collector....I LOVE IT!

    I suspect you are correct, but that one is better than most 64's I have seen.

    I also got this one. Seller called it XF-40. I think it would go AU although the strike might limit it to an XF price.

    Yea, I could go 40 on that, typical weak 21-S, nice coin though!
