That 20-S is an interesting coin. I think it would grade as a 10, but either a weak strike or stuck through grease. I vote for the grease.
I tend to agree, rlm. Might be better than G6. We were just talking about the 20-S and its miserable minting. Could be a very worn reverse or struck-through, yes. Lance.
I realize the difference is immaterial for that coin. However, I thought it would be of interest to those learning to grade. I would love to see that coin graded and in my Guess the Grade set. I will bet there would be several comments.
Hello, Here are all my "woodies" and I done the best I could scanning them as 2 of them don't look nearly as pronounced as in hand but I'll post them for your delight! Best reguards -Jay here is a shot of the back on this one as it was more noticeable that way. This one actually looks really nice however it seems to be notoriously hard to properly scan/photograph these so please bear with me.
I think the second is technically a lower grade than the first, but it should be RB. I think the first is 65 and the second 64+ or 65. BTW, I agree with your adjective for both of them.
Just right, Thad and rlm. Both are RB but the first is a 65 and the other a 64. I'll probably sell the 64RB. Sometimes the color designation throws me. I sent this '17-D 65RB back to PCGS for a regrade, using their Secure Plus service when it was first announced. I was hoping it might earn 66RB. Instead it came back 65RD! I shared the results with some dealers and collectors I respect and most questioned the call but several said it was a legitimate RD, and that they'd seen others of that era with a similar look. I am not convinced. What do you think? Lance.
Colors are one of the hardest things to determine from pictures. Using my monitor, if I look down to the coin, it looks like it could make red. However, if I look up to the coin, it looks red brown. I know there has been a color difference depending on the angle you look at the coin on my monitor, but this is probably the most dramatic I have seen. Now, I have done about everything except answer your question, but that is as close as I can.
Based on the pics, I'd call the 17-D red too. It's just a subdued red and with the luster I bet that it has, RD doesn't surprize me. I think it's one of those tweener coins for color. And....WOW....that's a stunning coin! :lease add me to your will::
It's rare to find these in wood.....NOT. It's actually tougher to find them without woodgrain. Also for this year, notice the classic weak PLU, O, and AM on the reverse. This is about as representative as they come for the issue.
Here's another one, a bit strange because it's a one sided woody. (Don't let Doug see this or he'll call it environmental damage.) :hail:
