I was right! It was a 1925. Here is the king of woodies - at least that I have seen. http://www.cointalk.com/t48345/
That seems to be a rather subjective standard. I'll have to keep an eye out. And I'll go through my stash. Knowing my luck, I probably have some downright ugly ones that only detract from the coin!
Just checking back through this thread from the top. Thanks for the great photos folks. And how they got to be this way. I've set aside some similar (grained/Woody) Lincolns through the years. Some were sooooo much so I deemed them ugly and used them for ammo to acquire different types. Some are MADE from ammo casings (the '44's & '45's....which I always considered an Irony ~because of the numbers involved.) But the caliber of some of these coins revolver around their composition? :goofer: I'll see if I can find a few & SHOOT them dd:....for posting.
I know this is in the US coins section, But I couldn't resist. My scanner didn't do it justice, it's much clearer in person.
ARGGGHHhhh Having looked at some of these photos, I went back to look for some of my old ones. Finally realized why they are not to be found!:rolling: I sold them on FeeBay:hammer: At least a couple of the 1909 VDB's. ...but at least it was long enough ago that I didn't know about cleaning them. Then again, if I had NOT gotten the mud off of them I would not have been able to even read the dates! Or seen the VDB.....or composition.... It's always something.
Didn't realize I had any woodies until I looked through my Lincoln folders and saw this. At least I think that's what it is.
If the woodgrain is evenly distributed, the toning can be very pretty, but sometimes only half the coin will have some woodgrain or there will be one streak across the coin, and in those cases it sometimes can be distracting rather than eye appealing, as stated above, whether you find it attractive is in the eye of the beholder. Here are a few of my Indian cents with some woodgrain toning that I think have nice eye appeal. (Don't know why these photos are showing so small, I tried different ways to get them back to normal size, but I guess you'll just have to click on them to see them better.)
