Nice '22 there mas4492. Looks better than a 63 in my limited knowledge of unc's. Does being a woodie knock the grade down?
Dern!! That looks like a better strike than mine. Full beard and wheats on a 22-D. Now that is a hard coin to find and a nice woodie to boot.
Now that I think about it, no. The problem that year was not that the presses were not strong enough to impress the metal but that the dies were used to the point there was nothing left on them to impress any longer. Even lead slugs would not have the detail that coin shows for most all of the cents for this date.
My first and only true Woody in my collection, which I got January 7th and just got a chance to get pics of:
It has wood-grain effect on both sides. Just harder to see on the reverse, but it's there. Just look near the rims on both the right and left sides (between the rims and the wheat ears). You can see the graining there in the opposite direction as it is seen on the obverse, just like it should be. Nice looking DDO by the way.
Nice 80 D Ratpack! I found one similar same date and MM, I believe they are the illusive single sided woody's. I am not sure how it happens though, I don't think it's metal comp, but some kind of residue from rinsing process after being struck? There was another thread talking about these that G was working on.
there is grain on the reverse it just doesn't show well in that pic. a little easier to see hear. It's hard to capture the grain.
Very nice, my photo skills are unable to capture the minimal reverse lines on mine now that I look at it a bit closer. I wonder if the 80 D is the only memorial woody?
