See Mike's post above. The incuse arc wasn't caused by the die. That's why it isn't smooth. That part grabbed me at first, but it's explained well in the article linked above.

We need to see both sides of the coin. Then we can see more details, and come to a more informed decision. The post is good. I have seen others that have been squeezed to get that effect, that is shown. If you place three coins in a stack, and place them in a ran, you can get the same effect.

That was my thought as well-- the LIBERTY across Lincoln's face looks like it is incuse, rather than raised, so if it is incuse it should be backward.

I believe you meant to say if it was a hammer job the incuse letters should be backwards. this is how I knew it wasn't just a damaged coin like some members was saying. some struck thru loose die caps can be really weird. I own one that almost everyone on the forum said was just PMD because it is really weird looking .

If it isn't too much trouble, I would love to see it for educational proposes. If it's too much trouble to get out, maybe some other time. This thread was very education for me. I too noticed Liberty being correct. That's why I said it was over my head to draw a conclusion.

Don't open that bag of worms, Jay... :D
I think this is the thread rascal is referring to. http://www.cointalk.com/threads/most-unusal1978-cent.166227/

thanks non cents for giving us this link to my unusal coin . I'm willing to bet that if foundinrolls sees this link that he will know what my coin is. it turned out to be a real mint error just like I said it was and a lot of folks were downing me and saying it was just post mint damage . this is why I don't try to post very many coins. I wish the MOD had not closed that thread because it was a good learning experience for beginning collectors.

I remember running into that thread when I first joined. The coin is very interesting, but like this coin, those off the wall errors are still over my head. I would like to know the final verdict though. There sure were a lot of urinated off people on that thread. Wow.

Reminiscent of Lord of the Flies once again, but I refuse to make any more historical references :)
