Yeah last 4 sales I went to they either wanted ludicrous money for a single 1973 proof set or nothing at alk
Nice coins, depending on what you paid. Seems like they are most often over priced. "Oh, this coin is 100 years old, so it must be worth $100"
That's why you should take an up to date price guide with you and show them that their price is out of line. That 1901-O is a lovely coin, even though it is not mint state.
Actually I don't particularly think it is my job to educate them. I mean if someone is selling a 1916 D Merc for $1.50, I'm gonna tell them. If they are selling a 1945 D Merc for $1.50, I'll buy it.
I see your point and it's well taken. When I was really into stamps, at shows I used to see misidentified varieties in my specialty fairly often. Sometimes dealers would have a cheaper variety priced as if it was the much more expensive one, usually due to ignorance. I had some really superb reference material that the vast majority of dealers didn't have. Knowledge and willingness to learn are keys. So, yeah, I'd tell someone who was selling a 1916-D Merc for $1.50.
