I had to buy a book of stamps at the the post office today. I got the book of stamps and my change, but not paying attention to the guy behind the counter. He opened up a roll of quarters and the first one out of the roll is.
Cool Cheryl! You know it is funny that the Media stated that the "District of Columbia" Quarter was the first U.S. coin to have an African-American on it (this probably came from the Mint). Doesn't George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington count? Although they were Commemorative coins, the coins still had a denomination on them (Half Dollar) and are spendable by all terms of "Legal Tender"! Frank
How true you are. George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington count, Yes they count. Sad how they have to build a coin up, Let them speak for them self. Cheryl
Ruben, I just checked and some News Agencies did state that he was the first African-American on a U.S. coin intended for everyday use but many other News Agencies did not. Frank

I"m the midwest, so untutored and unlearned. I didn't know Duke Ellington was associated with D.C. If I'd been there to pick it, I'd have gone with Frederick Douglass. I believed he lived in D.C. Much more historical in my book.
