My auction day at NAC was quick. I won what I came for as I got my main target which was up early on. Such a wonderful coin all and all, among the finest known specimens of the type. Judging from the gorgeous cabinet toning there's hopefully a hidden provenance to find here as well. It got quite expensive in the end but it feels worth it, prices in general were very strong today in the Roman Republican section. Anonymous. 208 BC. AR Denarius (4.46 g). Mint in southeast Italy. Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) to left. Reverse: The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback right; club below horses. Reference: Crawford 89/2.
I am happy for CT purchasers at the NAC auction who got what they wanted, really. For myself, I participated to 3x estimate. But when the coin I was bidding on went to 10x estimate I just logged off the auction. I just can't see myself paying amounts that are multiples of earlier record levels, particularly since there is so much instability at the moment. ... just my personal view.
I feel the same way. There is a lot of that going on right now, but not for everything. The coin I bought only brought slightly more than it sold for in 2013. But many of the coins I've bid on in the last 3 months were much like your experience. I guess the more items you go after, the more likely you are to eventually get one for a relatively reasonable price.
Yours is the finest I've seen. Apart from pristine condition, perfect old toning, and perfect centering, it was done with masterful style. I have a nice one already or I would have also bid on this. Mine is nice and also an NAC auction coin, but yours is worth the multiples more than mine for its great beauty. RRC 89/2 Ex. NAC 78
