I am on the lookout for a decent electronic tester for gold/silver without wanting to break the bank. Any suggestions? I am not liking the idea of the acid test that people use as I don't want to mar my stack purchases.
I don't know much about them but have read about this one - but I do believe this only tests gold. http://www.amazon.com/AuRACLE-AGT-1-Electronic-Tester-GemOro/dp/B00557CZQU
http://www.coinsupplyexpress.com/precious-metal-verifier They run $600-$800, but you could rent one as well for significantly less. Let me know via PM if you are seriously interested in renting one and I can point you in the right direction.
Here's another one that tests Gold, Silver, and Platinum but the prices are rising. http://www.igem.com/Tri-Electronics-GXL-NEXT-Professional-Gold-Platinum-and-Silver-Tester_p_607.html
I understand if something is plated that the surface testers will read false positives but a spectrometor is pricey for just checking casually gold and silver. Not sure if I want to invest in something that gives me no return on the investment. I buy from reputable dealers but just wanted something to spot check my PM. If I was a dealer that would be a good investment. I guess another option to go would be the gravity scales that measure displacement in water.
