One of the more meticulous sets I put together was the presidential dollars. The Dansco was loaded with historical facts and I thought a well done set might make a special hand me down to a grand-youngun one day....... After the initial series ran I remember the US Mint saying that would be the end.... Shortly thereafter George Bush senior passed and the mint did run some dollars commemorating him..... Has anyone heard if we may get a run of golden dollars for Jimmy Carter?
Have to wait 2 years and then hope congress passes a law to make them like they did with George H.W. Bush.
Curious why you are asking. My Dansco 7184 (P&D) has labeled holes for Carter, Clinton and Dubya, and unlabeled holes for 5 more unnamed dead presidents. I assume Carter will get one made. I wonder if I'll live long enough to fill them all. Clinton, Dubya, Obama, Trump, Biden, and Trump. That leaves the 2 holes for whoever is next! Ghoul pool time...who goes next? a) Clinton b) Dubya c) Obama d) Trump e) Biden f) Trump (yes, it might take a double tap) g) ?
I am OCD that way.... My Dansco has a space for a Philly, a SanFran and a proof. They didn't make a Bush Senior proof and it drives me batty.
When I realized that I had acquired the presidential dollar set by way of the silver proof sets, I went out and got Bush P & D uncirculated golden dollars to keep the set "whole". To add to your (and my) frustration, they did issue a Bush reverse proof with the S mint mark. It's a key to the set and a bit pricey, too pricey for me anyway. Thanks for the Carter reminder. (Below is my Philly BU coin)
Here's an old school President's medal, likely from 1901 when President William McKinley was assassinated!
It might be a fun hand me down for a young collector, but don't spend big bucks on nice ones. When I was a dealer I bought some of the Proof presidential sets from the mint. I was lucky to get $5 for them with the face value at $4. When I was a club officer, a dealer left a bunch of Little Coin Company sealed pieces at a show. We could never figure out who he was, perhaps for a reason. We finally decided to sell them for the benefit of the club. These pieces were REALLY NICE. I tried to sell them on lots of four different presidents starting at $5 in the club auction. There were almost no takers. Finally I offered them at face value. Almost no takers. The interest in these coins, at least ten years ago, was almost nil.
I have no interest in (read "I haven't bought empty holes for...") the Innovation dollars. I enjoy the Sacagawea-Native American dollars so I purchase the P&D business strikes every year (starting in 2012, they were not made for circulation. prior to 2012 I collected from circulation). I have holes up to 2031, so I may or may not keep the collection going after that (I think I can add 1 more page to my Dansco 7183).
Oh I know these will only be worth a buck. But I seriously did do it up in a Dansco with the Dansco history lesson on each president because my intent is to give it to a grand baby.
At one of the local shows recently a dealer put out the four coin President dollar proof sets for $4. He couldn't get any interest in them.
