I have a 1918 "M" mint marked Gold Sovereign. Behind King George's head are the letters "MOM21" .....

Does anyone know what this is?

(The coin appears to weigh the same as my other Sovereigns)

    It is a 'Love Token.'

A regular coin that is engraved with initials or a sentiment.

The "MOM21" is not engraved. The letters are raised as if it was in the mold.

It wasn't done at the mint. So, it's either a novelty coin, a fake, or someone altered it.

I took it back to the coin shop where I bought it and they looked it over and determined it was REAL gold but the coin itself was counterfeited. The weight and diameter was the same as real ones. The reeding was the big giveaway other than the "MOM21" .... they were puzzled by it and didn't look at it carefully enough before they put it out for sale. So they let me swap it for a South African 2 Rand which had the same gold value.
