We don't have many moderators as for the most part and the forums consists of 'mostly mellow' people, but we do have rules and they are somewhat stricter than other forums. We value the fact that we have minors and members from many foreign countries who may have problems with 'emotional' language. There is little need for expressing one's self with such. People have such heartache and separation dystrophy if they are force to leave the forum , that we hope the rules or at least the philosophy of language that would have been heard on 1950 public TV, will be followed. Yes, sometimes we are slow, as I went through once and didn't find the quoted vulgarity the first time, but did find another and figured the first had been deleted. It does help when reporting if you mention the post # ( bottom line of each post). Thanks Jim
Maybe you can sell them online.. There is currently an error kennedy up for auction on eBay Http://pages.eBay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=121422611540
I bet that is his auction and if this was KITCO they would delete it right away. Matter of fact those Nazi over there delete everything. <throws egg at Kitco website>
First of all I wish that was my coin. Second how is that off topic? The title of this thread is Gold Kennedy flaws...?
I don't know it looks like some kind of spot on it. The guy says it could be an error? I guess anything that's on the coin from the minting process that's not supposed to be there could be considered an error. What else could it be?
The topic is flaws. Not errors. Totally different and somehow I still really believe you are the owner of that coin
FWIW, two or three of the five I returned had a similar effect, mostly along the rim above Kennedy's head. When I realized that the same thing was happening on multiple coins, but not in identical distributions, I kind of stopped paying attention to it. It didn't look exactly like what's illustrated in the auction, but it's the same general idea -- frost creeping into the fields. I didn't do a great job of capturing it in photos, but this "stray frost" does look just like the frost on the devices -- same texture, same pit size, same optical properties as you shift the direction of illumination. It specifically does not look like foreign matter on the surface, hairlines, or contact marks. The Mint applies this "frosting" to each die, not the hub, as I understand it, so I guess it's not surprising that I saw different patterns on different coins -- if, as I've read, they strike about 600 coins from each die, they'd probably run through quite a few dies by the time the coins started shipping. I don't see this leading to "variety" designations, and I don't see it as desirable. I haven't gone through my other recent proof stuff to see if it's common in other issues. Again, I wasn't really trying to zero in on the effect when I was shooting the coins, and I don't have them now to try again, but here's what I can reconstruct from the photos I did take -- an overview and closeup of the effect on two different coins. (Sorry that the lighting wasn't the same for both, but trust me, the distribution was significantly different on these two coins.) My overall reaction to it was more or less "wow, the Mint's getting pretty sloppy". Between this and the smearing issue, I'm feeling kind of negative about the Mint's current proof manufacturing process...
It does look like they are getting sloppy. Just like everything else these days..the price is the same but the level of quality goes down.
I thought the ebay coin had a thicker planchette so yes that coin is flawed and on topic. However the fact still remains that a new person post links to an ebay listing is still suspicious.
Are we still going on about this? I'm glad I've given you something to be suspicious about in your otherwise mundane day but I'm here to learn about these kennedy flaws or errors. When the creator of this thread mentioned he had some with flaws I went to eBay and searched for gold kennedy flaws or errors to see if they were common or perhaps more valuable and found the one I sent the link to. I Was surprised by the asking price and wanted to share that with the creator of the thread. Not that I needed to give you an explanation but there it is.. Hopefully you are less suspicious of me now and we can get back to talking about coins. Thanks!
Unbelievable that the quality, -in this day and age- could be that poor. I would send every single one of them back to the mint. Absolutely insulting that they would ship your coins in that condition. How is it, that the mint in the tiny islands of New Zealand can consistently produce higher quality coins than the US Mint? It's a national disgrace if you ask me, and one more reason I find modern foreign coins much more appealing. Not that I collect much modern stuff to begin with, but in 2014 a commemorative coin struck in gold and costing more than a thousand dollars a pop ought to be absolutely flawless, at least until someone opens the capsule and messes with it. Which is what your coins look like, they look like someone took them out of the capsule and played tiddlywinks with them, returned them, and they got reshipped by the US mint to you.
Wow, what a great post. The whole modern super-grade game leaves me speechless at times, it's unimaginable that there could be that many stupid people out there, but apparently there are.
