Thought gold coins should have their own dedicated thread. It's not only often an investment in a numismatic piece, but a bullion investment, too. Here's a recent purchase of mine: a gem quality 1931 Vatican 100 Lira coin. I believe that the portrait is of Pope Piux X, the previous pope. Got it from Heritage, I didn't recall seeing many Vatican coins at FUN (though it wasn't my focus at the time). But I thought this was a nice looking piece and the premium to bullion wasn't outrageous for MS65 and Vatican/Italian history.
Nice coin. Roman numeral XI is Eleven. Label shows X (10) but coin shows XI (11) The label is correct because the 1930 coin shows IX (9) on the label and the 1932 shows XI (11) and the coins show XI.
I only have one tiny gold coin. Was my last purchase of 2019 so I guess it could be considered a newp. This is a one year type with a mintage of only 2,496. Actual coin Generic close-up photo of obverse borrowed from the net
San Marino .917 gold spider...low mintage: 9,000 1. I like it for the spider 2. I like it because it is gold. and 3. I like that its mintage is very low
It's funny/weird...sometimes you can pick up these obscure gold coins for just over spot/melt...other times, they want a premium that is obscene. The premiums on some of the larger-than-1 ounce Australia Wedge-Tailed Eagle coins are often 100-200% !!!! That's for a recent coin...not something from decades ago like Saints that has rarity in it and lots of collectors demanding it. I wonder often if those premiums will slowly dissipate over time....like with the SS Central America stuff that was so overpriced back in 2000 and 2001.
Why pre-1918 ? Anything special about that year (besides WW I ending and the Russian Revolution) ? Where'd you find the mintage on this ? Because I have interest in that as you can see here........ Picked it up on the last day of FUN.
These purchases were from earlier this month at the FUN Convention, I posted them on other threads so I'll leave the commentary over there and just post pics for the most part here. MS66 1923-D was something I have saved up for a few years....the 2015 American Eagle Proof I love the look and it was in place of my regular year-end bullion purchase....and the MS63 1915-S was my first lower-graded common Saint used as a substitute for bullion (usually bought Buffalos, Eagles, Pandas, etc.).
