I’d bet what happened was someone was planning on grabbing the money and running, but eBay’s policy of holding new sellers’ money until positive feedback is left prevented that and forced them to cancel all of the sales.

I bought a coin from midwestern sales during this auction and I was looking at the Gobrecht as well. It was going to sell for around 7k as I recall. It was advertised as an old Russian diplomat who passed away and his family was liquidating his coin collection. Most coins were raw, such as the Gobrecht and from watching this auction (which was going on for 3 days) most of the coins were going at cut rate prices......if this were all legit, they were taking a bath. Anyway, as sketchy as this all looked, I took a chance and bought one. And of course, I never got it. I got a full refund, and an email from the seller explaining that due to some PayPal issue, he was shut down.

Somebody has been trying this crap with higher grade 1916-D Dimes. Stealing legit seller’s pics and posting auctions. One even showed up under the PCGS auction records. Really makes me mad too. I hope they didn’t get a Dime. Pardon the pun.
