I got these two coins in a large lot and know nothing about them other than the information that came with them. Does anyone have the references below, or different references that can verify this info? Plus, do I have the obverse and reverse right and the correct orientation? thank you Mongol Empire Ghengis Khan A.D. 1206- 1227 Ӕ Dirhem 16mm 4.1gm OBV: “Just Coin of the Khagan, The Supreme” REV: Nasir La-Din Allah Commander of the Faithful” Thomas 20; Sourdel 593; BMC X, pg 83, 11.
I know nothing about Mongol coins but it would be pretty cool to have something from Genghis Khan Similar coins found online are not consistent in terms of obverse and reverse. Some show them as you've presented the coins, others with the sides switched. Your reverse images are upside down. An example from CNG's archives: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=306711 ISLAMIC, Mongols. Great Khans. temp. Chingiz (Genghis). AH 602-624 / AD 1206-1227. BI Jital (16mm, 4.16 g, 3h). Ghazna mint. Undated, struck circa 1221-1222. Nyamaa 5; Tye 329; Album 1969; ICV 1946. Here's an article that touches on Mongol coins: http://www.coinweek.com/expert-columns/mike-markowitz/coinweek-ancient-coin-series-coinage-mongols/ A reference work is mentioned in the article: "The only comprehensive modern catalog of the coinage of the Mongol Khans is Nyamaa (2005) a privately-published, bilingual English/Mongolian edition (the English is a bit rough). Apparently it’s out of print, but copies can be found for $85-100." There are several CoinTalk collectors who are probably knowledgable in this area. Hopefully one of them will chime in
@Victor_Clark nice score in a large lot! I don't have the best example, but I do enjoy my Genghiz Khan... Great Mongols, Genghis (Chingiz) Khan, AH 603-624/ AD 1206-1227, AE Jital (4.12gm, 2h), Ghazna type, undated, citing Genghis as Khaqan and citing on the reverse, the 'Abbasid caliph al-Nasir. O: 'adl / khaqan / al-a'zam("the Just and Supreme Khaqan" or "Just [coin] of the Supreme Khaqan"). R: al-Nasir / li-Din Allah / amir al-mu- / -minin ("al-Nasir li-Din Allah, commander of the faithful"). SICA-9, 1008; Tye 329; Album 1969
