First European settlement on territory of Ghana appeared in XV's century. It was Portuguese trading station. Several years later Portuguese have built their castle there (in 1484). In 1598 Dutch have founded their trading station in Ghana too. In the middle of 17th century Swedish, Danich and German traders have founded their traiding stations too. Ghana became a center of gold trading. It was very rich land. At the second half of 19th century a part of Ghana's lands was conquerred by United Kingdom and became a British colony. At March 6 1957 Ghana became an independent country. Kwame Nkrumah became the first president of Republic of Ghana. Republic of Ghana is rather successful country now. Population is numerous - more than 24000000. Average life expectancy - 59 years. But at the same time 1,9% of population have AIDS.
First coins were released in 1958. In that period monetary system of Ghana was similar to the British system.

Thanks, it's the Centre piece of my collection too be honest ! It's Denomination is 1 Ackey. Which I believe is something too do with how gold dust was weighed IIRC. It's about the size of a 1/2 Crown though. There's also an 1818 1/2 Ackey. After the monetary reform (denomination of July 1 2007) there is no pesewa-coins in circulation in Ghana. They use only cedis (as I know).
