I've got a couple. Nothing too exciting, but it's interesting to note how the eagle changed stylistically for the FRG coins minted in the 1970's & 80s as compared to earlier coins from the Deutsches Reich.
Right, here (in the Fed. Rep.) the eagle as a symbol of the country is always depicted heraldically. That is, you will not find, say, a flying eagle on such a piece. The bird always looks to the left (from the viewer's perspective), has more or less spread wings, and visible feet or claws or whatever they are called. On the other hand, the coin designers are free (and actually encouraged) to adapt the style of the eagle to the overall design. The results are fine sometimes, and ho-hum or worse on other occasions ... On the other hand, the eagle on current Polish coins for example is always the same, but its size varies: On the circulation coins and the commemorative 2 zł coins it is featured prominently in the center, while on silver and gold collector coins it is just one, and sometimes small, element of the obverse. 5 Mark Hessen 1876 (this coin is normally available and fairly common in VF or lower - in EF and above it is scarce to rare) 5 Mark Anhalt 1914
Then Greg, you MUST get yourself one of these. Nice city from what I hear. Have you been there? I am often in the area, but never actually been to the city. It has a strong seafaring tradition, which explains the motto on the edge of this coin 'Navigare Necesse Est'

I was only there once, when I was 4. I would love to go back though. I will definitely keep an eye out for the Bremerhaven coin.
An Ausbeutetaler or Konventionstaler 1811 for Jerome Napoleon, Napoleon's brother as king of Westphalia. His reign only lasted as long as his brother's fortunes....
And then the Mansfeld area was occupied or annexed by Prussia which issued mining thalers with pretty much the same design. Different king and kingdom though. In 1913 they issued a very nice commem with the same "Segen des ..." motto. Don't have it but you can see it here http://www.muenzkatalog-online.de/katalog/muenzbilder/medium/image_601.jpg Well, the annexing country came to an end as well ... Side note: St. George slaying the dragon - depicted on that coin - is the city's CoA. Christian
