Kaiserslautern is an old town in Rheinland-Pfalz with the population about 100000. It was founded in IX century. During the WWI Kaiserslautern's rulers minted this kriegsgeld.
Gorgeous! Home of Karl de Grosse! Edit: Kaiserslauttern sounds very familiar... That has to be near Hanau, because I know I have heard that name. (My father was stationed in Hanau twice, so I like German things very much)
For the background of this piece (and another one from Aachen, featuring a market woman) have a look here: http://www.cointalk.com/showthread.php?t=86455&p=781177&viewfull=1#post781177 Christian
Hehe, "near" is relative. Kaiserslautern is in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hanau is in Hesse, about 140 km north-east. But both places have or had American military installations. Aachen is "Charlemagne City" indeed. And in a way, that bear-wolf coin even has to do with him; see the link in my previous post. Christian
What, the word "kraut"? Well, I don't. The building on that piece from Trier is the Porta Nigra, by the way. A gate of the Roman city, built around 200 AD. (Trier, RP is the oldest city in Germany.) The Porta Nigra was also used for a city token in 2007: http://www.lifepr.de/attachment/3257/Repro_Trier_10x15_gold+Kopie.jpg And it will be on the RP state coin (€2) in 2017 ... Christian
http://www.cointalk.com/t108538/ Hello Ripley, This previous thread describes a couple Trier coins like yours. I like it too.
Dog, phh. That is a wolf, or a bear, depending on which version of the legend you prefer, hehe. Click/see here: http://www.cointalk.com/t86455/#post781177 (Posts #5 and #9 show the pieces that my comment refers to. And one of them is like the one you have.) Christian
The Halle Stadt has a very interesting design. A crescent and two David stars. I wonder if that city had a higher Jewish population just after WWI. BTW: Nice collection.
The crescent and the two stars (not stars of David), that is simply Halle's coat of arms. See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halle_(Saale)#Wappen - text in German, but it primarily says that there are various theories about the possible origin and meaning. Christian
City of Bad-Homburg. This town is situated in Hessen. The population of Bad-Homburg is about 52000. During a long time this city was the capital of the county of Bad-Homburg.
