Preussen, welcome aboard. You will find the Nazi occupation 5 & 10 Reichspfennig coins a real challenge to find.Since I've been involved in the numismatic trade,I have never seen, let alone had,a Nazi occupation coin. Aidan.
I am mainly looking for the 2 Mark coins during the Nazi (WW2) era, but I would be interested in collecting all of the dates and mint marks in the series. Im sure its quite a challenge.
Thanks for the welcome, Aidan. I have the 1, 5 and 10 Pfennig post-war occupation pieces in my 3rd Reich Type set. I've posted a pic of my proof 10 Pfennig occupation coin. I believe Proofs are pretty scarce; this one is PCGS PF64, and the only Proof of the type I've ever seen. -Preussen
Potsdam coins are very unique coins from that era. They have a church on the reverse and Paul Von Hindenburg on the obverse.
Perhaps you're thinking of two separate types as a single one? ; The Potsdam Garrison Church issues have an eagle on the reverse; The Hindenburg issues are a separate type, also with eagles on the reverse (5 Marks were minted with & without swastika). -Preussen
That's a very nice Proof 10 Reichspfennig you have got there. The occupation coins I am referring to are the ones that were used by the Wehrmacht that have the Swastika on the obverse with a hole through the centre of the coins (5 & 10 Reichspfennig). There is an extremely rare variety of the 1944 1 Reichspfennig that you'd better be on the watch for.It is also an Allied Occupation type as well. Aidan.
The coins with the hole are Reichskreditkassen issues which indeed were not used in Germany but in occupied areas. Except for the Berlin (A) pieces they are quite expensive in excellent (Stempelglanz) condition. The Allied Occupation coins (wow, nice piece, Preussen!) circulated in all four zones. They basically look like the Nazi zinc coins, except that the eagle has a tail instead of the swastika. The variety that you mentioned, Aidan, was made with the old nazi dies, with the swastika and the wreath removed. Mintage is unknown for that type, and they are very hard to get. Beware of manipulated or counterfeited pieces ... Christian
Thanks for the nice comments. I also have the Reichskreditkassen issues (the more common ones from the Berlin Mint, since I just wanted them for the type). I am familiar with the very early allied occupation issue where the swastika was simply removed from the original design, but I don't have any of these. In addition to my 2-5 Reichsmark set, I have a 3rd Reich Type Set, with many of the types in both BU and Proof. My main area of collecting interest is in the coins of Brandenburg-Prussia, hence my handle "Preussen."
Preussen,I did have a collection of German states coins, but there weren't any Prussian Thalers in it.I did have a Prussian 2 Vereinsthaler dated 1841,plus a 1 Vereinsthaler from Bavaria,a Mining Thaler from Anhalt-Bernberg,& a 2/3 Thaler from Hanover.I am in the process of offloading my non-British Commonwealth banknotes & coins to pay for my computer. Aidan.
Aidan: I'll try to post a pic of one of my Reichskreditkassen pieces this evening (can't do it from the office). I've always liked the design of the Anhalt-Bernberg mining thalers, although I've never owned one. -Preussen
