Those " Vereisntaler " where legal tender until 1908 with a value of 3 mark. Tey then where demonitizes because they where to worn and replaced by 3 - Mark - coins ( DREI MARK ).
This is a German "States" era coin, but I hadn't seen one like this before. Looks like Hamburg might have copied Saxony for their Lions Shield design. This is currently for sale from aspencoins, it ends in about 20 minutes. I might have to take a stab at this one.

Picked these up recently. They were my first Pfennig coins, I only had bought Marks before, man are they tiny! I still am having a hard time capturing the reflectiveness and toning on them in my pictures.
german empire or kaiserreich coins used to be my fave series. now, only one remains. a souvenir of my time there. i remember i got it for a good price... but the coin dealers in the shop were pretty unfriendly.
I am glad I revisited this thread! It's really great to see all the nice German coins. All of them are great. vtvick, it's nice to see that you are still interested in the series! Wow Darkhorse, that is a stunner!
Beautiful coins. Based on the established exchange rate by the gold standard, 4 Mark were roughly 1 Dollar. With the 1 Pfennig being practically a quarter cent it's only natural for it to be a bit smaller.
