ugh. i hate fakes and fakers. i would have thought they would focus more on US coins and bullion, which have a much greater market. seriously, why fake german 2 marks? lol. unless, is that a rare date? do you think there are many fakes on the market Mynter? would a simple weight test work on them, or are they more advanced now, like the modern fake bullion?

Umm, why fake modern British £1 circulation coins for example? Because it means a profit for the counterfeiter. He did write that this is a contemporary counterfeit. In other words, it was intended to deceive those who accept and spend it as means of payment ...

    Hello,
faked Empire goldcoins are indeed a great problem, as large numbers where produced legaly between 1960 and 1975, when the law finally put an end to this. Fortunally the rim - inscription is very hard to get by for fakers.

Those contemporay fakes wich were ment for circulation are rather rare. When discovered they would have been distroyed , so most of them are gone. 2 mark was a huge amount at that time ,and by what I have learned the 2 - mark together with the 1 - mark was the most often counterfeited denomination. But according to newspapers of that time, even 10 - pfennig - coins were counterfeited.

I find it very interesting to collect those fakes . For the first it is educating. You are better enabled to jugde if a dubious coin is genuine or not if tou have seen fakes aswell. Given the fact a thought that many german coins are quit expensive it is funny that you barely can find any literature on that matter, so the only way is buying fakes in order to study them. And I have to admit , this " fake - hunt " is just a little bit of fun as well.

    Mynter,

Sir, if you have the time to put together a new topic in the future on faked German coinage it would be pretty great. I don't think much has been written in English on the topic. Maybe a couple photos of some of your fakes or others along with a legit example. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the topic.

Walking around town this morning I stopped into a local shop and picked this 1888 2 Mark up. It has a nice patina to it and very little if any wear. Not a rare coin with 500K minted. I don't collect alot of 2 Marks, usually only the special issue or commemorative ones. I guess this fits since it is a one year issue.

If you have specialised on the Empire commems the " Friedrich coins " as they were called at their time may fit in very well. Even if they where minted for circulation ( the currency law of 1873 did not allow commemorative issues ), people regarded them as souvenir issues and collected them. Shortly after all four denominations were issued you could actually buy cased sets with an inscription like " To the fond memory of ... " or something like that.

    Best regards, Mynter

Wow, gbroke, you have some amazing coins. How are you currently storing them? 2x2s, album?

These two ended tonight on eBay. I was prepared to spend a lot more than I usually do for the hamburg proof, but it went even higher then that. ($222 with reserve not met) Darn.
Does anyone have a book value for the Hamburg proof in 64CAM? Just wondering.

Aside from trying to find auction history examples, I am not sure how to find a value for the various MS grades. If I had to guess, I would say the reserve on that is probably around $500. Mostly due to the Cameo.

I store the 5 pfennig in a Dansco album. When I first received all the German coins, I bought the custom MM pages.
I wasn't happy about the price of the pages, especially when they could have put twice as many holes on the same page.
So I decided to do this:

Just saw this listed on ebay, 1913 Bavaria 5 Mark Proof. Can't afford it, but maybe someone here can.

Not a coin though, rather a medal. It's just that Goetz had many of his designs made while others would stop at the plaster model stage. ;)

    german states coins

I have only recently been collection German states coins. i got an 1819 Bavaria 6 Kreuzer a few weeks ago, and yesterday, i got a 1859A 2 1/2 Silber Groschen, in really decent shape. I think i got a great deal on it. Both times i was looking for more modern silver german coins and found great deals on these 2.

Interesting coin Ripley, I don't think I've seen that exact reverse design before. I would like to see one with full detail.
