I got thrown into coin collecting in 1997 when my father passed away and his "coin collection" was divided between my brother and me. His collection was mostly a jar full of like coins, i.e., cents, nickels. etc..... As a retired accountant, I loved detail work and I loved to look at the coins. I didn't know much about your website until about 2 years ago. I didn't submit much, because I didn't know anything. I found I liked the coins from the Mint, and I bought special sets they sold. I have a healthy set of Mint coins and such and I like them, but their pricing, etc. got out of line with reality. I looked around town for dealers with a good reputation and I wanted to check out some gold coins... This is going somewhere, so hold on. Anyway, he had a certified MMIX Ultra High Relief Gold coin as MS68, with the original shipping box and the wood box and papers that it came with originally. I got it for about $1,300. I thought it was a good deal until my research found that anything less than MS69 was not worth much. I also bought a Liberty Double Eagle Eagle for the same amount, raw. I sent it in with the dealer to a show and had NGC grade it. I got the dreaded "Details grade". (UNC DETAILS: Scratched Obverse.) Evidently, NGC is real tough on scratches on the Obverse. I got an MS 61 on a Liberty Eagle. As far as my Liberty Double Eagle, I would like someone that knows something about gold coins, to look at it and show me where the heck the scratches are and why I got a "Details". grade. Thanks for listening, boys and girls. I love you guys.
