Though this Antoninus Pius of course predates Diocletian by quite a bit, I think this reverse is GENIVS POP ROMANI?
I love those Severus II coins... they aren't as easy to snag as some may think. I've been trying to get a good one at a good price for years. Nice coins! Here's a Galerius from Ticinum that frustrates me. My photos aren't great so you maybe can't tell but that mess on his face is just green mineralization on top a nice portrait. It's not corrosion... the actual coin surface is in good shape. A brave person who knew what they were doing may be able to remove it and have a very nice coin. When it comes to coins though... I don't trust myself to not ruin the coin if I tried to get the encrustations off. So, I'll leave it as is. Galerius AE Follis. Obv: MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, laureate head right Rev: GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked except for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae; Left field: star; Mintmark: ST dot. RIC VI Ticinum 35b
Lovely coins everyone, I only have a couple & this is the only 1 that has yet to be posted by anyone - Galerius - Lyon / Lugdunum
This coin is gilt on obverse…possibly done in antiquity, as the deposits look old. Constantius I A.D. 296- 303 25x27mm 9.2gm FL VAL CONSTANTIVS NOB C; laureate and cuirassed bust. GENIO POPVLI ROMANI; Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, right holding patera, left cornucopiae. RIC VI London 14a/20
Nice coins everybody - very attractive examples. Mine's pretty ugly, but it is the rarest emperor I own - Severus II. Severus II Æ Follis (305-306 A.D.) Heraclea mint IMP C FLA VAL SEVERVS P F AVG, laureate head right / GENIO POPVLI ROMANI Genius, naked, standing left, modius on head, with patera and cornucopia, HTB in ex. Heraclea RIC VI 30, B (9.16 grams / 28 mm)
Bing, the Genius figures on your two coins make an interesting comparison. The top figure looks like a weight lifter & the bottom figure looks like a long distance runner.
I took a few more follis coins out of the moth balls. The 1st coin had the silvering in such pristine condition I had to get it slabbed. Severus II as Caesar, Lyon Mint, 305-306, 8.40 gm Maximinus II as Caesar, Cyzicus Mint, AD 305-308, 9.54 gm Constantius as Augustus, Lyon Mint, AD 305-306, 10.58 gm
This is probably the nicest Genius I have ever owned. Obv:– IMP C CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, Laureate, draped bust right (seen from the rear) Rev:– GENIO POP ROM, Genius standing left, wearing modius and chlamys, sacrificing from patera on flaming altar and holding cornucopiae Minted in Lugdunum (CI | H/S / PLC) A.D. Autumn A.D. 308 to start A.D. 309 (Bastien) Reference:– Bastien 509 (75 examples cited). RIC VI 287 (though Bastien groups both Modius and Towered versions into one group) 6.35 gms. 25.67 mm
Very nice! Here's a Galerius follis from Alexandria when he was Augustus. Some may recognize this one.
Ex Dattari too! Here's my ex Dattari Galerius Antioch: RIC 55b, issued c. 300 I really like the style of the OP coin.
maridvnvm, the die work on the reverse is exquisite & came from the hand of a great celator! I like the portrait of Constantine the Great too. He looks very unsettling with that piercing stare.....
Getting back to Antioch. I have just received this lump from Antioch. From a slightly earlier issue than the OP coin. it comes in at almost 10.5 gms which is towards the upper end of the noted weight range given by RIC of 8.75 - 11 gms. Mine shows more wear and surface issues but is still pleasing in hand and the 3d nature of the portrait (as mentioned in the OP) is more evident in hand then the image would imply. Galerius Follis Obv:– GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, Laureate head right Rev:– GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius standing left holding patera Minted in Antioch (K | E / V // ANT). I have always liked the sideways glance in the eye of Licinius and the furrows on his (worried?) brow. Genio is sporting some muscular leg calves here.
