I went to the Gem and mineral show yesterday, and went back again today. I asked a couple vendors if they had any o seen any; they hadn't. I was looking at a table with with fossils and meteorites and notice some roman rings and keys which led me to a tray of ancients. Mostly imperial and provincials with some Byzantines(its I collected Byzantine coins I'd been very very happy). All were in decent condition and priced well (50% off too since the show was about over). I had already spent most of my money but was about to get a couple neat coins. I have a coin of Salonina but its pretty beat up, and I don't have a later period tet. of anyne, so I picked this one up. Roman Provincial, Egypt-Alexandria, Salonina, AE Tetradrachm, 267/268 (Year 15) KOPNHΛIA CAΛωNEINA CEB Draped bust right, hair weaved in rows with long plait coiled at back of head, wearing stephane, Eagle standing right with spread wings, wreath in beak, palm behind L IE in right field Emmett 3854; Milne 4189; Curtis 1642; BMC 2280 Don't recall seeing this type before either and snatched it up too. ANTONINVS AVG - PIVS P P TR P XXII, Laureate head right, COS - IIII, Togate figure standing left on pedestal in arched shrine, S C in ex RIC ???
ahahaha, randygeki => man, apparently you should have been a Geologist (we see some pretty cool things underground ... crystals, metals, *others*) ... wanna job? (-40 doesn't hurt that badly for too long ... it becomes normal) ... that's amazingly cool -edit- you've got there (really cool => very neat, congrats)
Sounds like a fun show! I'm trying to ID all of the specimens in the group shot. I think I see some schorl, aquamarine, copper, muscovite, fluorite, prasiolite (or is it prehnite?), garnet, various fossils, maybe a chunk of blue pectolite (larimar)? What the iridescent specimen at 10:00 in the group photo--Chalcopyrite? Bornite? Do I see a piece of Smithsonite in there? And a tiny piece of lapis? A chunk of galena or hematite at the top? Can you label that group photo?
Haha thanks! Almost forgot, I won the raffle there today too...... twice! ruby sphalerite w/ calcite in layed. I forgot what this one was. Maybe one of you can jog my memory.
My mom grabbed half of those so IDk if I can lol. 1 no clue 2 might be larimar (i sat a peice of aqua marine on it in the pic) 3 I think are both silcon 4 no idea 5 might be Smithsonite. It fluoresces green under a uv light.
Silicon-- yeah, could be. I was thinking those were galena or hematite. To me, #5 looks more like larimar and #2 like Smithsonite, but somehow I doubt it is Smithsonite. I'm blanking on similar-looking minerals right now. Peacock ore is bornite, right? Or is that the common name for chalcopyrite? I thought the two paler specimens labeled fluorite might be prehnite (I'm rusty ).
Nice stuff there randygeki. I've never thought about checking the gem shows for ancient coins. Cool finds. I do check the desert around here for cool stuff.
Awesome display!!! I love rocks!!! I would die if I found a shell in the desert. That's mad awesome! Find as many as you can before some invents a fossil detector.
Bornite. Had to look it up. I'm not rust, I just don't know lol. Galena may be right, it doest feel like hematite. BTW the orange ammonite looks hematized in hand. Always more neat to find them, very cool. I Found a sea shell once in the middle of Pheonix on a construction sitelol
Awesome Randy, i collect rocks, gems and fossils. i really like the shark tooth and bottle cap, very cool.
Great rocks. I love rocks, gems, minerals and fossils, as well as coins. All expensive hobbies when combined and buying the best. You never know what you'll find at a good mineral and gem show. My problem is, I'm running out of display room.
I agree, some nice gems. I used to be into stones when I was younger. Talking about fossils, the coolest thing I have ever seen was the inside of an underground coal mine. When you go down there, there are literally millions of fossilized plants in the coal. if coal was not so common it would be an incredible fossil. Even as it is, I have considered getting one for display.
