The Edict of Nantes in 1598, which formally ended the Wars of Religion, still left La Rochelle with a privileged status as a Protestant &quot;safe haven&quot;.&nbsp; Louis XIII and his formidable chief minister, Cardinal de Richelieu, were determined to bring the Protestant cities back under full royal control and started a series of military campaigns in 1621. It was during this period, between 1625 and 1628, that La Rochelle struck this unauthorized coinage in the king&#039;s name, with the standard royal type and weight but not always with the proper amount of silver.
